Any experience with a 260 on deer
« on: October 12, 2009, 12:55:14 PM »
I ran across the new ruger compacts with the 16" barrel at a local gun store and noticed the only caliber they have it in is a 260. I checked on the ballistics and it seems comparable to a 7mm-08. Wondering if anybody had real world experience with the 260 and the maximum range you would feel comfortable taking a shot with it on deer.

I love 6.5's!   ;D  Got 2 260's and 3 6.5x55's.  Matter of fact I'm gonna use my M7 in 260 with 120 gr. bullets at 2665 fps this year.  I can tell you the 260 works just fine at around 125 yards.  I think the outer limit would be because of my limitations, not the cartridge's.   :P

Never had a .260, but have a 6.5 Swede that's taken it's share of whitetails.  The two are just about ballistic twins.

My two favorite deer rifles are the 6.5x55 and the .257 Roberts.

I have the M77 MK II Ultra compact in .260 and love it. I shot many deer with it at 100 -150 yds and 2 at 200 + and Knocked the heck out of them. This was my go to rifle for my all day hunts until I got my Contenders. I highly recommend this Rifle and Caliber. Steve ;D

The .260 has been becoming a popular caliber amount long distance competition matches.  When I had one in a Ruger Mark II, it was nice.  The caliber is good for whitetails up to 500 yards and slightly further.  It's foot lbs of energy is still over 1,000 at 500 yards, but that's a velocity of over 1,800fps out a 24" barrel with 140gr psp bullets.

The deer I shot were down quick.  Even took one straight on as it was the only shot I had for the moment and I wasn't in the mood for waiting long given his rack size.
