ASM 1851 conversion 38 special wedge
« on: October 13, 2009, 01:49:42 PM »
Hello. I have an ASM 1851 factory conversion revolver in 38 special and would like to know if anyone knows what available wedge I could get that would fit this revolver.  The wedge is getting pretty beat up, and I can't find one listed anywhere for this particular model.  All loads I've used have been factory 38 special LRN.  VTI has parts for the ASM 1861 navy cap and ball, but no 1851 or 1851 conversion. The wedge looks the same as the one from most other black powder 1851 models.  Should I try Pietta, Uberti, etc wedges until I find one that fits?  Are the wedges that were made for revolvers meant to take factory smokeless loads stronger steel than the ones made for cap and ball revolvers?  The revolver will put five 158 grain LRN's into 2" at 30 yards and I'd hate to retire it when I run out of wedge.  Any help on this subject would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I would try Dixie Gun Works. The wedges are the same for 1851 C&B guns, and finding one to "fit" can be an issue. Most of them I have replaced come oversized and take a little bit if filing to get them right.

I have a gun just like yours, and mine too is accurate. The steel is VERY soft though it seems. I don't shoot it much at all.

A outfit called Deercreek bought up a lot of ASM parts when they folded.  I'll dig up the # and post it.  They do not have a web site.  You can check the black powder section at the high road or the firing line and search to find it.

Yes, the wedges are all the same size and will fit all blackpowder open top guns.  BUT they do come oversize, so you will have to take a little off with a file.  Take the minimum off so it just fits and that will give you some adjustment if it wears in.  They seem to all be of mild steel so you can file them to fit.  I would try 'e-gunparts.com' on line.  They have the Uberti wedge's available but they are $24!  You might call EMF and try them, I have bought parts from them before and they seemed reasonable.  Definately don't try to run +P loads through that gun.  44 Man

Thanks for all the replies.  I will try Dixie and see how it works.  I figured they would be pretty soft steel, as it is obviously preferrable for the wedge to wear before anything else.  Definately no plus p, I think I'm going to stick mostly to blackpowder loads in this gun, so it lasts as long as possible, and because it is so much fun to make smoke.
