399 Weatherby
« on: October 14, 2009, 02:19:57 PM »
I keep seeing the 399 weatherby case roll by on the weatherby add.
I know it is not a real round, but the Price of a vanguard.
What would you do to make a .399 weatherby?
What parent case, what diameter bullet (375 - 423), what grain, what velocity, and what game would you gear it toward?
Neck 284 win up? = 405 Win for black bear, hogs, and white tail?
Neck 378 Wby up? for Cape buffalo / Elephant
Neck 20MM down? for Tyranasaurus?
Let's hear your ideas.

weatherby has this weird rolled down case not like necked down, but i would neck down the 460 wby case and use it for anything in north america. probably a 400gr .399 bullet at about 3000fps ought to do it.

240 Weatherby case blown out straight. It'd be a 400 Whelen with a belt for headspace. I've thought about this quite a bit, it would be a good big game round in a 30-06 size action.

WOW.
Neat Ideas.
But there are a bunch of 40's out there.
What would you use?
411 (405 Win), 416 , or 423 (404 Jefferys)?
I am guessing the 400 wheelan you would look to the .411 for bullets that work at the 405 speeds.

Bah, y'all are thinking small.  Put a belt on a .50 BMG case and neck it down to use .399" bullets.  Of course, you then have to MAKE .399" bullets, which gets expensive, but nobody shoots a Weatherby cartridge to be cheap, right?

Like I said 40 caliber bullets.
You know like how 270 is really .277.

I know.  I don't know that the .405 Winchester bullets would hold together at the velocities a necked down .50 BMG would make, let alone one with a belt added.  .416 Rigby bullets probably would.

Well, if you gotta do that, look at the 416 Barrett. It's one serious long range round, about the same effect as the 408 Chey Tac, but more practical. (If you can call a 2500 yard sniper system practical.)

Close, but it's based on the .505 Gibbs, not the .50 BMG (according to Wikipedia, anyway), and it doesn't look belted.  Gotta make it belted to make a Weatherby Magnum, right?
