I was talking to my buddy Mikie the other day.  Said I'd like to move up in capability from my 30-30 handi and was thinking of a good caliber between that and my 45-70 Handi.  I asked his advice what I should get for my next Handi..... his response was a .308, for all the reasons already mentioned.  I was surprised by his answer.  I got side tracked and bought the 7-08 and love it, but it's still on my 'to do' list.  44 Man

Now you can do like me, after I buy that .204 Ruger barrel from LONGTOM, I'm gonna send my Handi in and have the .308 barrel fitted for it.

In reply to mannyrock, I was referring to the length of bolt throw, not recoil. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I have a beautiful Marlin 336 CS in 30-30 and a Tikka T-3 Lite in 30-06 that shoots sub-MOA groups. I've taken deer and elk with those so why would I need a .308? I didn't, but last week I bought one anyway! Mine is a Howa Ranchland Security rifle. The .308 is a great cartridge!

Close to the truth. The .270 Win is a .277-06. When Remington did the .280 Rem / 7mm Express, they did not just neck down the -06 case because they did not want anybody to chamber their .284 load in a 270 and blow their gun up.
The solution was to lengthen the -06 cartridge by 0.050" so it would never fit in a 270 Winchester chamber. So the .280 is just a little longer and holds just a little more powder than a 7mm-06 would.

Is there anything left of the squirrel? (wink)

I think you're supposed to shoot the squirrel in the head.

Now how did that come out as "squirrel"?

Now I get it, the forum has an automatic spelling corrector.  Instead of warning you that it doesn't like your spelling, it just rewrites your message for you.
How do I turn it off? Big Mortie always spelled it "S-Q-U-I-L-L", but every time I type that it comes out as "squirrel".

There was a fellow by the name of Big Mortie on one of the old forums, probably H&R Talk, who posted stories of his 30-06 adventures and the joys of living in a trailer with a toothless fat woman. I suspect he was the alter ego of one of the regulars on that forum.

Hey, I just found a "Big Mortie" post. Was he here on GBO back in the day?

I have a special load for my 308 and 06 just for squirrels. I hate wasted meat.

I use a short crossbow bolt wit a boresized wad to go in the case.
A banner is folded around the bolt and attached with nitrated string so it burns off shortly after leaving the barrel.

The banner ha a picture of Janet Reno....naked! :o

I shoot for the tree trunk where the arrow embeds itself and the banner unfurls. The squirrel dies of shock with no meat destruction at all.
I once shot into a very large Oak tree and just sat for a while. Over the next 2 hours, 32 squirrels fell out of that tree, stone dead.

Just a cautionary note. DO NOT  PRINT THE PICTURE IN HIGH RESOLUTION!
I did that once and the Squirrels became hard and brittle much like stone. They were inedible.

Last year I had a son in law that bought his first firearm.  Of course he came to old Pop for info.  I recommended the Survivor in 308.  He called me later from Wally World and they had white box ammo on sale.  I told him to buy all they had or all he had money for.  When we sighted in, the first group of 5 was less than an inch at 100 yds.  I had to move the scope twice to get it dead on.

I don't know how it gets much better for a "cheap" gun and "cheap" ammo.  He is now armed for any game animal in the lower 48 with plenty ammo, scope and rifle all under $500.00.  Beat it if you can.

I've been debating lately on getting an accesary barrel or new gun in 308 or 3006, for deer and maybe black bear next year.Found a Dick's Sporting Goods store a ways from where I live , just to see what they have I stoped in and they had a 308 Ultra Varmint, camo syntetic stock, with scope, bull barrel, for 249.98 plus a Dick's $20.00 gift card for a Remington purchace over 250.00. Had to buy a box of Rem. shells to hit the 250.00 mark. Just had to give this lowly 308 a home. And its a CBA------- Mfg Ilion NY

I have the 308 H&R Ultra and have shot 9 blacktail bucks to date with it, but a few hogs, blk bear, etc.  Good rifle, but yeah I prefer a 30'06 myself, but no one had one around at the time.
