the good rifle for the home
« on: October 15, 2009, 08:08:27 AM »
which one of these gun do you think is the best and why? the AK-47,SKS,AR Style Rifles,FAL, HK,  CETME , M1 Carbine , or a lever gun?

I like the M1 Carbine becuase it's light with HP ammo is ok for hunting and i just like the way it looks.

where is home ? The carbine is a great gun for what it is a replacement for a handgun . It is almost equal to a 357 mag maybe a 327 fed mag. If you live where you need a rifle not a hand gun it would be a bad choice ( i like a carbine but its not a rifle ) .If home in in a city it might be a good choice as no center fire hand gun cal lever action holds 30 rounds of ammo . A good 30-30 would be a nice house/farm gun . A M1-A would also be a great gun if you were worried about attack from what ever . I know it wasn't on your list but it is making a come back and looks like a carbine on steriods
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I have an M1 carbine and hate it.  It's completely unreliable.  I don't have a pick among the guns you listed since I've never owned several of them.  I keep a shotgun for defense but not the cheapest shotgun ever produced...  When my life is on the line I don't want plastic parts and lowest bidding production... I'll never understand why others do.

12 gauge pump shotgun that holds 8 rounds. Racking the first round into the chamber should be enough to send most criminals in the other direction.

cabin 4, that was an interesting comment. One of my friends visited with a thief who just got out of jail. The crook was ask what he feared most, and it was exactly what you said, the sound of a pump shotgun feeding a round into the barrel.. :o ;D :D
duk, I don't know if the Mossberg is the cheapest shotgun ever made, but the times I have used it , it has been 100 percent reliable. Plus, I leave it sitting by my bed with extra ammo. If someone breaks in, it is no great loss if they take it.  ;)

How much should a security shotgun cost ? I guess an $80000.00 Holland & Holland would work great right up to the time 3 or more tried to attack you .
Just kidding I don't care for the cheap pumps either as a defense weapon , I like a remington police magnum , knoxx butt stock , 8 round mag , rifle sights , police composit forearm and screw in choke tube. The other one is a pistol grip 870 . Don't waste time about being able to hit with it , if you own one PRATICE and you can become good with it .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I own most of what you asked about.
For the house  ???
I guess it depends on where your house is.
Ranch - open space - the 308's
Farm- Open space with woods - the 308's
Rural houses- large property- any would work.
Residential houses- the AR- or the 308's with frangible ammo.
Apartments- Same
But I have always have a shotgun as home protection as a primary and have had 22 mag or 22 Hornet as a Coyote gun.

They don't make a much better, and more dependable defensive, OR offensive shotgun than a Mossberg 500 Persuader. Fact whether anyone likes it or not. I don't own one, and prefer an 870 Remington that I do the work on, and I also used and have used a slicked up 1100 Remington with mag extension, and rifle sights, for a first entry gun.
Cabin, as far as the pumping of the action striking fear in the hearts of criminals? Don't count on it, I met several that it didn't faze.
Rifles for the home. AR15, 357mag lever, 3030 lever, AK. Take your pick. For the home and yard area though. The shotgun. Hand me an 870 loaded properly and send me in a building, I'll go, and have gone MANY TIMES with the full expectation of winning. Same with a Mossberg 500, and liked better the thumb safety rather than the one pm my Rems.
I taught it, and lived it, and although that Mossberg 500 kicks a little more because of the aluminum receiver, I never EVER, saw one fail, and I shot'em on the combat training courses for almost 20 years, and watched others that prefered'em over my Remingtons.
My own opinions, based on my ACTUAL EXPERIENCE, and others actual experience. Not training, not pretending, and not surmising. Actually using both shotgun brands in fight situations. No one has to agree with me, it is not required. ;)

By the way. That M1 carbine. You shoot somebody with that and it might just make'em madder. ;D

And you most likely wont'. They are sturdy, well built, and most of al RELIABLE in a fight. My son a Sgt. with the 82nd Airborne, carried one fighting house to house in Baghdad, and I told him before he left, no better fighting shotgun is there, and when he came back, he agreed.

I'm personally not that fond of Mossberg shotguns tho I've owned only one a .410 that seemed to function OK. I sold it to a friend without ever shooting it tho as I just wasn't impressed with it. I admit I did look hard for one for a home defense shotgun awhile back but couldn't seem to locate the one I was looking for so ended up with a Browning pump home defence gun instead. I'm sure it is a better gun and honestly price was not all that much more.

I believe the OP lives in a housing project in a city assuming we are to believe the stories from him to date. For that use I really don't feel any rifle is appropriate as a home defense weapon at least not unless and until total chaos breaks out and society crumbles. Until them a shotgun and some birdshot loads less likely to kill a neighbor in an adjoining apartment seems far more appropriate to me. So yeah a Mossberg pump gun would be the better choice rifle here for this application I think.

A good house rifle would be a lever action carbine in a pistol caliber.  A Mossberg 500 from Walmart would be better.

Why only pistol calibers from a lever gun and why only a Mossberg from Wal Mart?

Pistol caliber finger flippers cause they hold twice as many as a 45-70.
and if you want to talk about round the house gun fire power is king.

You don't want to shoot through walls.  A .357 Marlin holds a lot of ammo and is easy on the neighbors sheetrock.  A Mossberg 500 from another store will work ok too.  The Remington 870 is excellent.  I wouldn't spend very much on a repeating shotgun.  The cheap ones are as good or better than the expensive ones.

Why only pistol calibers from a lever gun and why only a Mossberg from Wal Mart?

I think what Swampy is trying to say actually makes sense in the power catatgory, and ECONOMY. The pistol calibers in a rifle hit very hard, the rifles usually hold twice the ammo as other rifle cartridge rifles, the down range isn't as dramatic in a semi populated area, and the WalMart remark is you can get a good shotgun cheap at WalMart, and Mossbergs are usually a good buy there.

Plus if you have a pistol caliber rifle you can have a pistol in that caliber too and share ammo.
If you need them the 6 in the revolver can be loaded into the rifle for more power and accuracy.

if you choose a Thompson 45ACP rifle then the 100 in the drum mag can match the 15 in the para P-14 ......
add the 8 in the renington 870 mag. 6 in the side saddle along with 25 on the bandioler (sp) and who knows how many drum and stick mags for the thompson along with 7-8 for the para .
You should have it covered up to 75-100 yards . Throw in a M1-A with say 10  , 20 round mags and you would be well heeled most anywhere .
you could most likely do all this for under $5000.00 .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Why not go with the AK then?
I have 100, 75, and 40 round drums for mine and at 7 pounds for the AK Vs. 9.5 for the Tommy gun as well as 100 rounds of 7.62X39 weigh less the the same amount of 45 ball.....

I have an AK and its amazingly accurate and it has been 100% reliable. I never had not one single failure. I never would have thought a semi made from what appears to be old beer cans work so well.

I've bever seen an AK that would shoot less than 4" groups at 100 meters.

If an AK can do 4 inch groups at 100 meters with iron sights, there aint nothing wrong with that.In fact, it sounds like my AK. If you scope the rifle out it would likly turn 4 inches in 2 inches. What wrong with that??
