Any Wisconsin grouse hunters here? Where is a good area in Wisconsin to go for grouse?
Thanks.

Park Falls advertises as the ruffed grouse capital of the state.  Price County tourism is very focused on grouse hunters and the county forest and other public land is managed mostly as grouse habitat

I don't see all that many grouse in Price county this year. Honestly, I think you can go anywhere and find them there. Where are you from anyway?  Just go along a creek and walk. I don't know why so many hunters pull over at the end of the road where my land is and hunt the walking trails on county land. These places get so hammered that I wonder if most are just looking for an easy walk.

I would forget the advertised areas and areas that are grouse managed areas. Too much pressure. Marinette county land is good, eastern part of state. Look for logged areas (6 to 15 years old)  with a good mix of evergreen that gives cover to wintering birds. Look for lower ground when leaves are off. Good luck.

Kind of strange this year is supposed to be a peak yr but I haven't seen many.  Granted I haven't hit it very hard, mostly just deer scouting but I usually see quite a few that way.  Seems slow this yr to me.  Have seen some out walking my dog but not many.

Each peak has been smaller than the last one for nearly 50 yrs.  Aspen stands are maturing, not being cut and converting to maple/hardwood stands.  You can't grow lot's of grouse without good habitat.

BTW, my flush rate has been 4-5 birds/hr for a few hunts this fall.  Much of it can be credited to a better dog than I've had in a while.  Birds to the bag...let's not talk about that!   :D
