Garmin has the correct gps for truckers.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=275&pID=31541

Know The Way

With detailed maps providing turn-by-turn directions that call out streets by name, the nüvi 465T provides specialized routing to support truck-related restrictions (customizable by height, weight, length, width and hazardous materials). Simply enter dimensions and load restrictions and nüvi 465T guides you according to your requirements. You can even enter multiple-point routing so that you can take a more efficient route between multiple stops along your trip.

Would it be fair to say the New York politicians are shooting from the hip?

I've never used a GPS while driving. I'm not against using them for travel, just saying I don't bother. I use a map and preplan my route. I make a  small list of turn points, ie: turn left on Rt. ### and I haven't had a problem. Navigating a truck in a city would be a good place to have a GPS that sent you on the correct routing.

I'll never again go out of state without my GPS. Heck even in state if far from home I'll have it. On my PD shoot trip to OK this year the trip thru Memphis and OK City using it were no hassle and nearly no white knuckle driving due to it.

  As one who lives in NY State, I must say this;
How much more evidence do we need to prove that NY politicians are stupid? Alas; we who live in the common sense areas of the state (rural areas) just can't outvote the ashphalt jungle dwellers.

When I was in Sales I did not have a GPS but kept my laptop open with Street and Trips maps open. It was a bit dangerous at times typing with the laptop on the console but it sure saved me time and gas. Now that I have a GPS I would never go back to driving while using a laptop.
I still use the Street and Trips to optimize my stops when I have several places to go

Did anyone bother to read the article? Sounds to me like officials are tired of prying tractor trailers out from under bridges. Nearly all GPS units are intended for use by autos not commercial vehicles. The turn by turn directions that little girl is quoting you will lead you on a short route intended for a car not a 13'6" X 9' wide truck.

Every one of the GPS units I've dealt with have a pretty big disclaimer about " don't trust your life to this thing it is just better than a toy and may well ruin your day". Truck drivers are trying to blame the little girl for their problems. Instead of admitting they trusted a twelve yr old Japanese girl who had never been in the US to route them through some of the most complicated areas of the nation. Five yrs ago few drivers used them and everything got delivered, just as it did ten yrs ago. Are there that many new roads in New York city?

Commercial drivers need to be, and generally are, held to higher standards than the general motoring public. It is part of your responsability to plan a safe route to every destination. DOT maps with published routes and bridge heights and weight limits are available to all drivers and must be adheared to. Until one of the mapping programs is certified by the DOT you are betting your life that the little girl knows a lot more than she is willing to aknowledge.

Now I will admit that outlawing the GPS is stupid, no more useful than outlawing passanger car type maps. Simply hold the driver accountable for his irresponsability and go on.

The truck driver is expected to obey traffic laws, including travelling on proper roads and bridges.  If the driver takes the incorrect route and gets caught like little a kid, he will cry and blame on something else.  In the pre-gps days they would calm the company sent them on the route.  The bottomline is the driver is responsible for his route.

They have atlas to keep them on track.

It appears that some truck drivers and the politicians are on the same level.

One time a truck driver stopped and asked me where an address was in an old gold mining town.  The streets were designed for horse and buggy.  I told him he should contact the hardware store and get a better route because of the narrow street. (The hardware store maintained a warehouse at a better location to take deliveries.)  He said the delivery address was down that street and against my advice he went down the street.  His truck became jammed between two old brick buildings.  It took a couple days to get his truck out of there without tearing down the historic buildings.

Years back I met a truck driver out of Ontario, Canada at a California rest area.  He had a few questions about what was ahead of him, and he was checking his truck drivers’ atlas for information.  I left that conversation respecting the driver for planning

Living in this state of big spending politicians who are driving many of their highest tax payers out, I don't really believe their problem is stuck trucks. That may well be their EXCUSE..but their reason is likely revenue collecting! Likely as not, they want to  catch truckers on posted roads.
NY State is in deplorable financial condition, primarily because so many stupid voters keep it blue..which puts it in the red! ;) ;D

Our major financial squeeze has taken place since, since our former gov was caught buying favors in a DC cathouse and the present blind man took his place. Physically blind is no problem..but his financial/ethical blindness is!
Since the departure of our kitty pursuing former governor, fines and fees have increased exponentially and speed, registration, tire and all other kinds of traps for fining drivers have done the same.
My grandson stores his custom Mustang each winter, normally he could switch plates , insurance & etc to his beater car for about $20, this fall it cost him about $150 for the same thing.
All fees & licenses have gone up greatly, and now they tell us they are replacing the normal 6 year liscense plates early and instead of $10 they will cost $25. Hunting & fishing fees have taken off for the moon.
...And these thick-headed liberal politicians wonder why people are leaving...and they cannot attract new business ventures. If one wonders what unbridled liberalism will do to the nation...take a lesson from the "blue states"!
