Need help for 2010 WY deer and antelope hunt
« on: October 17, 2009, 05:11:24 AM »
I am looking for some advice on what units to hunt in WY for a combo mule deer and antelope hunt on public land. This will be a DIY hunt. Just so you know, I am not looking for being on the cover of Eastman's, I just want a good chance at a mule deer/antelope buck. I have hunted in WY before about 6 yrs ago in the Gillette region for antelope with my brother and (then) 12 yr old son. We paid a trespass fee to a rancher and had filled all our tags by 11:00 a.m. on opening morning with my son getting the largest buck  :). This time I will be going with a friend of mine (he wants an antelope and is 66 yrs old), and I want a mule deer and possibly an antelope if I have time (I'm 50 yrs old). I put in the ages because we aren't the youngest guys anymore and to take in consideration the terrain. Like I said before, I'm not really interested in a record book buck. I would rather prefer a good chance at success and take an average buck for the area for both mule deer and pronghorn. Since we'll be coming from TN, any chance at extra doe tags would also be an added bonus. Thanks in advance for any help I may receive. Sorry to get lengthy but I wanted to give as much info as I can so I can get the best advice. Lonnie.

;) Lonnie, Although I haven't hunted the Gillette area, I would offer this advice. Since you want to do both deer/antelope, I would look at that northeast corner of the state if you can arrange a tresspass fee. Here is the reason.. Areas that have lots of public land, are very difficult for nonresidents to draw. I do not want to discourge you, but areas like Rawlins that have huge amts. of public land can even be difficult for residents to draw. Since you mentioned your friends age, he probably will not want to apply several years before getting a permit. Even then on the public sections he may not be successful.    :-\ :'( I do know folks  who drawn the ne section of the state very often, maybe even every year, due to the private land situation. I would contact the G & F. and get a list of land owners NOW..that allow tresspass hunting. Once your arrangements are made with him, you know you have a place to hunt, you are set... Any other information I could offer please don't hesitate to ask. This is what I would do if I wanted to hunt Wy. for sure next fall. I am even thinking of doing this myself for another years deer hunting..... ;)

WCH, thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I need to know. I saw all the public land available but I haven't sorted through all the WY game and fish data to see what the odds are of drawing and scoring on an animal. I also am not familiar with the terrain of WY other than the NE area. My brother went back to the area with 3 friends from work last year and they all got antelope but he arranged with a landowner and they paid a trespass fee as a group. He didn't plan ahead but went and knocked on the door of a ranch they saw with quite a few goats. It worked out for him but I would rather have everything in place before I went. I think your approach is probably better for me. My brother still has the landowner's name and number from last year and I think he may have a list from the Chamber of Commerce in Gillette with more ranches. I'll start with that and see how it goes. Thanks again and any other ideas are appreciated. Lonnie.
