Another what is this thread (and my first post...)
« on: October 17, 2009, 06:49:44 AM »
Okay, I picked this shotgun up while I was down south, It is serial number NF26****, so made in 90-91. Anyways, the thing thats driving me nuts (I've been digging through forums, and H&R are closed till Monday) is I can't figure out if its an SB1 or SB2.

The barrel says: HANDI GUN MODEL SB2
                          20 GA. 3" MOD (P)

The receiver just says NEF, made in gardner and has the SN.

What really gets me is that the Handi-Gun was almost a pistol and the NFA got rid of them, so, what the heck do I have, why does my 20 GA bbl say HANDI GUN MODEL SB2?

If you need pics, I can upload, won't waste the bandwith unless you really need them.

Thanks!!

Welcome! The Handy Gun and Handy Gun II were pre '87 H&R firearms, not the same as the Handi-gun, you can see the differences in frames by checking the pics in the FAQs, an SB2 has a skeletonized tang where it attaches to the butt stock.

So am I to assume that somebody put a different barrel on this receiver? From the two serial number tables I've found its either a 90-91 being NF26**** S/N.

I know about taking the butt stock off, I really don't to, only have sockets at work but I will be there all day. Maybe this will help, it has the survivor series stock on it, the skeletonized pistol grip with the storage in the back.

Thanks for the welcome!! These things are really cool and even if it turns out to be an SB1 I'll get the .410/45 Colt barrel, and just buy another SB2!!

EDIT: Do you know what size bolt that is on the inside of the stock?

Here, have some pictures while were at it...

I'm pretty sure it's 9/16 and you'll need a long extension to get to it.  If it does turn out to be a SB2, you should be good to go.

All your questions should be answered in the FAQs including how to remove the stock, as for the barrel/frame, if it was factory fitted, the last three digits of the serial number "should" be engraved on the left side of the underlug of the barrel, that's not definitive because anyone can mark it, but the factory does 99.99999% of the time. The stock style tells nothing about the original configuration since all H&R single shot stocks fit all of their firearms, we swap em around all the time.

Thanks for all the help, I did check out the FAQ before starting this thread...

Just got the butt stock off, its not skeletonized, so it looks like my choices are limited for this particular receiver.

But again, thanks for your input guys!
