How to store pistols in safe.
« on: October 17, 2009, 01:05:06 PM »
How do you all store your handguns  in your safe .  Do any of you have a storage system where you hang them on the door.  If so could you share pics on how you did it?
Thanks

Can't seem to find a picture, not sure where I stored it. I made a rack for my top shelf in the safe out of 1"x6" and 1"x4" lumber. Took a scroll saw and made cutouts for the barrels and dust covers to rest in. Works great! It's a double decker, holds 24 of my most frequently used handguns. Still looking for the picture.

I traditionally keep them in soft cases to prevent them from scratching each other, etc.  The hard cases take up more room but I also use them too.  Old but clean socks work too.

I have a fair collection of handguns, many of which are rarely fired and mostly spend their life in the safe; they were bought in a moment of weakness, or to add to the collection.  I hate cleaning guns, yet I want to keep them in as pristine condition as possible and prevent rust and incidental damage.  I found several years ago that the best way to preserve the appearance and ensure there is no rust/damage is to store them in a silicone impregnated gun sock, some I ordered from Midway, others from Cabela’s.  I clean a handgun, put it in it’s sock then back in the original box, when I take them out years later they always look as good as they did the day I put them away.  It takes a little more room, but when you look at the rising prices of firearms it is cheap insurance.

I had a rack built inside our (8' x 10'vault) which is reinforced triple wall rebar steel mats inside that poored concrete and room is lined with 1/2 inch boiler plate and welded up solid, just like you would hang sheet rock. Walls are 12 inches, so is the ceiling and floor too.

It has a Fort Knox safe door on the outside of room opening, which is covered by a 1 inch thick steel door that is secured. In addition, the Fort Knox safe we have is the large model and came with a place to hang pistols or whatever inside the front door. I don't have any pictures but you can go to any dealer and see for yourself.

Those safes are ok but leave a lot to be desired when it comes to getting a rifle from the back that you want to take on a hunt or range practice. You are always bumping some other weapon and tuff not to mark those nice rifle up. Thus the reason for the vault, the better weapons are spaced so one can pick them up and return without a big hassel. If your going to build a new home, this is the only way to go........put in a vault room, you get 3 times the room for the money spent!

When or if mounting anything on the safe door, you have to keep in mind that the inside is basicly fabric covered drywall.  With that said, I used a thicker 1/4" piece of pegboard and secured it using plastic anchors, at least 6, along with the appropriate hooks.  The hooks came with spacers to place between the pegboard and fabric/drywall.  I put clear plastic tubing over the hooks so there's no metal to metal contact.  If you arrange the placement carefully, you can store quite alot.

I just added additional clips and an extra shelf.  That gives me 3 full shelves about 4" apart.  Then I take them out of the boxes and lay them flat.  Safe queens in the back.  The top shelf has about 8" of clearence...I keep cased guns here as well as by binos, etc.  The only prob is with shotguns with 30" barrels...I need to take them apart.  I also use a "golden rod", one of those dehumidifiers that plugs into a wall socket...works fine and have never had a problem with rust.

Here's a pic of the wood rack I made to go on the top shelf of my safe. I store the less frequently used handguns in their boxes in the bottom of the safe. Cheap and easy to build.

I think that picture certifies you---Don't let the ATF see it they will question your sanity.
I like the rack and that should tell them you have a level bubble.

I keep the blued guns in a treated sock. That goes in a soft case. Then I just stack them in the safe. I found it handy to tag the cases.

Most wives have no clue how many firearms their husbands own. Actually, I'm not too sure at the moment.----- ::)

The Key is Not to get  married to them. Just keep one around for a while then get a new model.  Just like guns.  Has worked for me..   In all seriousness you guys that have been married 20 years and longer. I take my hat off to you.  What sacrifices you must have made to make it work over the years.   That’s whats wrong today, no one wants to sacrifice

My wife never looks in my gun safe, she knows there's a lot of handguns in there (no rifles or shotguns) but she's very patient with my addiction! Today is our 45th wedding anniversary, she doesn't look 65 but she is!

The last gun show I was at in St. Charles,Mo. a few weeks ago--as I walked by two guys who were talking, I heard one say "My wife told me that if I brought another gun home, she was filing for divorce." I looked him in the eye, and told him--"Your sure going to miss her, I'm sure."

He cracked up.
