Installing a peep, what about the original
« on: October 18, 2009, 03:48:32 AM »
I plan on installing a williams fp rear peep sight. I am wondering what to do with the original buckhorn rear sight. Should i fill in the dove tail, leave it...i dont know.

Some pics of what you guys have done would be awesome...

You want to remove the original rear. Sight picture is crap otherwise.

The most common solution I've seen would be to put a dovetail blank in place of the rear sight.  T

any particular insert that fits better in a 336? Or will it take a trip to the gunsmith to get it shaped?

If it is oversized, drive it in, then masking tape the barrel around it.  Now file it flush with the barrel (be careful, you CAN cut through the tape with the file).  Finally, cold blue the insert and remove the tape.

I would suggest you make your own slot filler blank:

I fill the slot.

Put the original sights in a ziplock bag, roll up.

Drill a hole in the stock under the buttplate.

Hide the original sights in the hole then reinstall the buttplate.

Actually, they come blued, already. I think you guys are going to too much trouble installing these? I just file the bottom of the dovetail(on the insert not the barrel) until I get a good tite fit into dovetail slot and drive them into the slot in the barrel? You'll never get cold blue to look like factory bluing?

Yea, I have to agree with S.B.  I do exactly what he does, the filler blank looks great, it only takes 20 minutes or so, and there is no blueing or reblueing involved.  You guys are making this way too complicated!

I have also made a slot filler, just like the one shown in the prior post, by taking a rear sight tangent sight, cutting off the end that contains the sight (using a hack saw), grinding that end into a mild point on my bench grinder, cold bluing the fresh cut edges, and putting that in the slot.  This takes about 30 minutes and looks great.

well i finally got my williams peep from midway, and it looks like i'll be able to fold down the original rear sight and have a clear sight picture. BUT, i have not sighted the gun, so i dont know if the peep is going to be lower. I plan on filling it with a blank if theres a problem.

Thanks for all the advice.

JP,

In my experience, when you mount a peep sight, you also have to replace the front sight with a much higher post or bead, to match up with the peep.   After you do this, the front post or bead is way too high to use with your original tangent rear sights.  Again, just my experience.
