If it's an SB2 Ultra Slug Hunter which is on a 10ga frame, a 45-70 barrel won't fit right on it, it's only made for 10ga based barrels.

Tim

It's a 12 ga.
He had a 10 for $225.00 but I wanted the receiver for the 45/70. If the barrel doesn't fit, I'll sell one of the frames. It looks like it will though.

The SN is HU337XXX

According to the accessory barrel page, it would be eligable (Starts with an H).

The 12ga SB2 shotgun frame isn't the same as an SB2 rifle frame, it won't work with any rifle barrel, the barrel swell is ~.100" larger on the 10ga based barrels, if you read the accessory barrel page carefully, you'll see the 12ga rifled bull barrel(USH) is listed under the 10ga section.

I did read it carefully Tim and I don't think a 10 ga barrel will fit on this frame.
If it doesn't fit, I'll sell one of them so how about not wetting on my parade!

Sorry Peternap, but the rain done fell, the 20ga USH will fit on a SB2 rifle or SB1 frame, but not the 12ga, the SB2 USH frame is heat treated investment cast alloy steel just like the SB2 rifle frame, but the side walls are much thinner to accomodate the 12ga USH and 10ga barrels, overall dimensions are the same otherwise.

Then why won't the frame accept a 10 ga barrel?

Probably the same reason other barrels may not work, they aren't one size fits all. If you compare the side walls of either an SB1 shotgun or SB2 rifle frame to the SB2 shotgun frame you'll see the difference.

The 10ga frame has the typical large shotgun firing pin too, the top edges of the side rails are thinner which leaves a bigger gap between the 1.1" standard barrel chamber swell, the 10ga barrels have a 1.2" chamber swell.

Having seen pics of his gun collection and read about his rechambers and reloading experiences I decided a long time ago that Tim knows of what he speaks.

The bad new is that your 45-70 barrel aint gonna fit your SB2 10 Guage frame that is used on the 12 Guage Ultra hunter. The good news is you got a pretty good deal on your ultra hunter. If I were you I'd try to sell one of your Ultrs hunters in the GBO classifieds and there are SB2 Rifle, not 10 guage  frames for sale there often. Even if your 45-70 barrel were to somehow fir the SB2 10 guage frame that is used on the ultra hunter 12 guage, the firing pin is larger diamiter and the primers will flow into the firing pin hole with the hotter loads.

It done rained.

Before I do anything with or to my BC I always ask here.  I'll admit it's mostly to get Tim's opinion, but there are plenty of other people here who know more about these guns than the people who make them (especially now).

Well, the first thing I'm gonna do, is see if it fits. I expect it won't but I'll try first.
Then I may sell it, or I might rebore it to 10 or if there's enough meat, 8 bore. Kinda doubt 8 but you never know.

It also gives me a play 12 while rechambering the other to 12FH.

There are a lot of options if it doesn't fit. I may re chamber to 3.5 so I can get more powder behind the slug. Right now I'm limited to 100 gr of RE17 if I fold crimp and 110 if I roll crimp.

Don't know yet and won't do anything until I get the barrel next week.
That's part of the fun of playing with cheap guns.  ;D

Maybe a little. H&R should be writing for the Government.

This has PO'ed me,,, just a little :-\ Glad I own TC's because the SB2's just went on the experimental list. The new one should be a good candidate to see just how much RE 17 I can stuff in those 50 BMG cases, before it comes apart.

I'll put the 45/70 barrel in one of the safes for trading material later on.

Peternap, there is a way to make a standard barrel work on the SB2 shotgun frame if you keep the pressure low enough so the firing pin size isn't an issue, I toyed with the idea of using a Shilen blank with an underlug welded directly to it instead of a stub, but it would have been a high pressure chambering so didn't follow thru with it. Using your 45-70 barrel, you'd have to either attach shims to the bottom of the chamber swell to account for the difference in size, or just bed the underlug as Fred did in his barrel fitting info in the FAQs. That would all be dependent on the load level and primer you load tho, trap door and into levergun should work fine, and if you rechamber to 45-120, you can get close to Ruger velocities at trapdoor pressures.  ;)

Am I the only one who thinks life would have been simpler if they had named the 10ga frame SB3 instead of SB2?

Yes, it sure would have, it's caused so much confusion and frustration, not only for owners, but for H&R staff too, I'm sure.  :-\

Tim

I thought about the same thing last night while measuring the barrel to ee what it could be reamed to. I could also use the barrel itself as a sleeve for a liner or just use it as a stub. The firing pin isn't an issue. It's simple enough to install a bushing and make a new pin for it.

The simple fact is, I'm so mad at H&R right now, I don't want to fool with them anymore. I went out to the shop and looked at all the things I could be working on (and all the accumulated gun parts) and wondered why I fiddled with the Handi in the first place.

I think I'll stick with my original idea of finishing the 12FH, destructive testing on the new frame and putting the barrel's away with all the other junk I have.
