I would say a 45/410 barrel is the worst of both worlds.  The 410 is a pitiful shotgun round and I've heard the 45/410 barrel doesn't shoot 45 Colt cartridges all that accurately.  I don't know about your 454 Casul question; it would seem to me you could in an Encore but definitely not in a Contender.

If you want a shotgun, go with a 20 gauge at a minimum in your choice of smoothbore or rifled.  Then get your 454 Casul barrel if you like.  You can shoot 45 Colt cartridges in a 454 Casul chamber but I would recommend only shooting 454 Casul cartridges in it and download them if you like.

The 45/410 barrel is good out to about 30 yards and I have shot clay targets with mine but as has been said for shooting the 45 colt no good at all because the jump of the bullet is too far. because the 410 is a 3 inch chamber and the 45 colt is about an inch shorter. used for small game or snakes it is ok but dont count on it if you wont to shoot 45 colt.

Of the 14 barrels I own, if I had to sale one
that would be the first to go.
It's fun but not practical for hunting IMHO.

Yes I know that this is no a very accurate barrel but I have used one to shoot grouse and the 45 will hit a barn door. I was just wondering if it was a possibility of the 454 with out damage to the gun.

I have both a .45/.410 barrel and a .460 S&W. I wouldn't dream of shooting anything other than .45 LC or shotshells out of the .45/.410 barrel.  The .410 barrel an absolutely perfect weapon on Blue Grouse, but as others have mentioned it has relatively poor accuracy with the .45 colt rounds. I've shot .45 Colt, 454 Casull, and full power .460 S&W mag out of the .460 S&W barrel with excellent accuracy from all three. From a recoil standpoint, the .45 LC is a real pussy cat, the .454 Casull is fun but gets your full attention, and the .460 S&W mag is shootable but not much fun for anything but serious hunting unless you're a masochist! I'm going to have to put a brake that barrel some day.

Thanks Bp I will not be shooting any thing but 45 or 410 in it. I thought about it but have listened to others.

BPhunter,  Glad to hear your Having fun with that 45/410 Barrel.
I really enjoy shooting this barrel as a shot pistol. I think this is what TC really intended. The fact that it will shoot .45 colt is pretty much an after thought in my opinion. You can chamber 454 Casull and .460 S&W ammo, but the throat is so far down the barrel I would have to believe accuracy would be on par with a .410 shotgun shell.   ;D  Anyway, the SAMI maximum average pressure for a 45 colt is 14,000 PSI. The 454 Casull and .460 S&W Mag are listed at 65,000 PSI. I write this for the benefit of anyone else contemplating the the same thing, and yes, I also wondered (for a few seconds) if I should try it.

I think the fact that it shoots 45 Colt is what makes it legal in many areas.  Not an afterthought, a plan.
