It followed me home...
« on: October 18, 2009, 03:40:20 PM »

Savage Model 10FP chambered in .223 w/ 20" barrel and Accutrigger.
Heavy barrel is button rifled and has a 1:9 twist rate.
Scope is a BSA Mil Dot 4-16 x 40mm w/ AO and lighted reticle and Butler Creek flip-up caps.
Stock is Choate's Varmint model w/ Folding Harris bipod.

I just took up Coyote hunting a couple days ago, and this thing follows me home from the gun shop today.
Who woulda thunk it?  ;D  Havent had a chance to fire it yet, but looking foward to it...have heard and read nothing but good reviews on them. Lots of reports of 1/2 MOA accuracy right out of the box @ 100 yards, figured it will make a good coyote gun.

Heavy barrel is button rifled and has a 9:1 twist rate.

Nice rifle Flatlander. You're going to be able to shoot some mighty heavy grain bullets with that 9:1 twist rate. ;)

Yeah thats what I was thinking too. The bad thing is...I sold all my reloading equipment and books a while back. Im kickin myself for it now...but needed "moving" funds at the time. So, for the time being Im gonna have to try a few different factory loads to see what it likes to eat. I already have a 40 rd. box of Remington 45 grain hollow points. I figure thats a starting point anyway.

Flatlander,

I was sort of kidding with you there. I think you meant to say that the barrel has a 1 in 9 twist rate. A 9 in 1 twist rate would have the rifling doing 9 twists every inch. Everyone knows what you meant though, so I figured I have a little fun with it.

The bottom line is that it is a nice rifle and the 1 in 9 twist will indeed shoot heavier bullets. My Rem with a 1 in 9 twist rate will shoot 75 grain Hornady A-Max bullets very well, and it will shoot all the 65, 68, 69, and 70 grain bullets by Sierra, Berger, and Nosler, extremely well. And what's really nice is that it should also shoot the really light bullets well. I haven't tried any yet, but I have a box of 55 grain Sierra HPBTs that will get loaded up in the future.

Please let us know how the 45 grainers work in your rifle. Hey, that baby is a Savage, I'll bet it shoots everything well.

LOL...missed that wwhen i typed it...I fixed it, it now reads correctly. yeah that would be a rather fast twist huh? Been a long day.  ;D
No worries... I can take the ribbing. I was hoping to get a chance to put a few rounds through it this evening...but, had to go help a friend with a buck he got while he was hunting down in Switzerland county this weekend. Maybe I can slip out after work sometime this week and get a range report on it.
Im also thinking of a future re-paint job on it.

Nice rifle! Should do real well in coyote control.
Repaint? I like it that way, then again I am not toting it around.
Be sure to post your pict up in the Big Boy Toys sticky. ;)

It followed me home..then it ran away... :(  Man,of all the luck...had an unexpected expense come up and had to take the Savage back to the gun shop. The shop owner (who I have known for years) said no problem on the return. I even offered to pay a restocking fee for having to bring it back but he said dont worry about it, its no big deal.
Crap...Ive been wanting one of those for a long time too. Oh well... :(

Wow, that's UGLY I sure wouldn't have let it follow me home but then they do say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But man that one hurts my eyes.  :o

Now thats not right. My woods has trees and shadows, I think it would fit right in. ;) Then again, I dont shoot a range around other folks.  ;)

Trust me the camo job was NOT what I was referring to.  :o

It's that weird thumbhole stock that is so ugly to my eyes along with of course that savage bolt. If Savage would do something about that bolt it would make their rifles far more appealing to my eyes. I've seen a stock similar on other rifles so I guess it's some sort of after market job but wow to me those things are UGLY. I realize not all share my view of them.  ;D

Yup...it was ugly, I admit. But, what I had in mind wasnt looks, it was performance. Anyway...it dont matter now. As I stated in my post before Bills first post, the gun had to go back to the gun shop due to an unforeseen financial event that arose today. I consider mself lucky that I know the shop owner very well and he didnt have a problem with me returning it, otherwise I would have been in a major pinch.
Oh well, stuff happens. Theres always tax time... ;D

Sorry to hear that, buddy.  I hope everything all works-out for ya.  With a little luck, it'll still be there when you come back. ;)

Take care, Dinny

Ya never know, it IS ugly so maybe no one else will want it.  :D  Just really stinks cause it was really close to the exact package I was looking for, at about half the cost if you were to buy all the stuff new. Anyway, no sense beating a dead horse about it. Just didnt work out is all. I'll just have to use my Omega and make it an even bigger challenge IF I can even get a coyote called in...Im a rank newbie to yote hunting so Im not expecting success right away.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Hopefully thing will work for you.

Sorry I guess I should have checked the rifle out better. I have never seen one up close. I do agree with you about the bolt. I thought you were refering to the camo. My apologies sir.

You may want to consider what type of hunting you will do with that Savage. Don't take this wrong but I prefer a lighter faster rifle for yote hunting. I am new to it also. This guy was at 200yd coming toward me to 150yd and I had to run get my rifle off the 4-wheeler, run back and he was at 200yd again getting ready to jump into the woods. I just got him in my scope and shot as he jumped into the woods. I found him dead about 30yds into the woods. I don't think I would have got him in the scope that fast with my heavy barreled rifles. I use a 223 Superlight with Burris 3-9. I think a heavy barrel would be good for sitting and playing sniper. I hope to try that also. ;D
