H&R model 1908 12 GA. singles
« on: October 18, 2009, 05:19:55 PM »
I just bought a couple of H&R model 1908 single shot 12 gauges. They are definatly in need of some TLC and parts (hopefully only a new stock). Any idea were I could find a stock for this model without breaking the bank? I would need to the forend as well. I have looked at e-gunparts.com and they want about $110 for stock and forend. Also any info that anybody might have about these guns would be helpful.

i would imagine those wood sets are hard to come by if ya dont wantto spend that money maybe someone could make   the forearms?  might check that route, if 110.00 would restore them to original  it wouldnt be  that bad? if you were in the idea of keeping them ?

Having researched it more, buying the stock doesn't seem like such a bad deal, finding a couple of forearms, now thats another subject. Quick question for anybody who might know, what is the shortest legal length a shotgun barrel can be? Are they easy to cut down by yourself or should it be done by a pro?

Also, how would I know what choke they have? It just says 12 GA. CHOKE on them. Don't wanna blow one of them up trying to put something bigger than the barrel down it.

Most times when the old ones say 12ga choke they are full choked. Also the forearms are hard to come by I bought one out of Canada a few yrs back for the steel spacer but also found out the forarm fit a USH bbl.The forearm cost me about $40 with the shipping. Kurt

Shotgun barrels have to be 18", but go 18.5 so you have a bit to work with to get it nice and uniform, a common hacksaw will zip right through it in about a minute. the overall has to be at least 26". Happy Hacking!

Drop a dime in from the breech. If it stops at the muzzle, it is a full choke. If it comes out, it is probably a modified choke. Most all the old 12 ga 'were' full choke. This is only for the 12 ga.

Do not use a hacksaw! You will not get it straight. It would be better if it were cut on a lathe. If you are only going to use shot and never slugs, you can use a new tube cutter. Then use a round file to de-burr the inside of the barrel. I did this and then later cut it on a lathe for using slugs.

The tubing cutter works fine, then use the home methods listed in the FAQs for adding a nice crown, done it, works great.  ;)

I don't see where they have the forearms but if I was looking for a stock at $68 you should snap that up as they must of found some because they did not have any when I looked about a yr ago. I think most of the parts for these old guns come from tearing guns apart and selling the parts or by finding rare new old stock supplies. I think Brian (Hofs01) has been has been following this for a couple of yrs as he is always looking for the snap on forearms. Kurt

This might be an obvious question but its one I don't know the answer to so I am going to ask it. What is the giant bolt that goes through the stock and holds the receiver on called?
