** Updated** .357 Magnum on a 2008 SB1 Tamer Frame
« on: October 20, 2009, 07:20:00 AM »
I've read the posts listed in the FAQ regarding this combination, but I'm still a little confused.  I understand that the SB1 frame is adequate for the pressure of the .357 Magnum.  However, I am still confused about whether the larger shotgun firing pin is an issue or not.  I looked at a SB1 .44 Magnum today at lunch and it has the smaller rifle firing pin.

Can anyone confirm that the larger shotgun firing pin frame is safe to use with a .357 Magnum barrel?

**Update**

I went to the indoor 25 yard rifle range today.  I shot about 20 CCI Blazer .357 Magnum rounds to get it sighted in and then another 3 of the Federal Premium 140 Grain Barnes Expanders.  All shot well and no signs of any primer issues.  I'll shoot her again at 50 and 100 to verify zero tomorrow, then it is off to the youth hunt!

Also, the H&R service rep I spoke with said there is a subtle difference in firing pin size between the rifle and shotgun frames but that it is not a problem.  However, given the number of posts here about bad CSR data I just would like a little more warm and fuzzy before I shoot it.

I don't recollect any problem with the Mag on SB1 frames, H&R will fit the 357 and 44mag to any SB1 frame made since 1987, but some of those that have Max barrels have had some problems with perforated primers, but a switch to different primers would be all thats required to solve that issue, if it's a problem with the Mag, I think the primer switch would be all that's necessary if you handload.

I have used both large and small firing pin frames with my heavy bullet max loads and there is no problem of any kind, IN MY GUNS(this does not mean it will be the same in your guns!). If you are shooting factory ammo, no problem! The typical "sold in dept. store" stuff being offered now is so wimped down it's not even close to being a real 357 Magnum, more like a typical .38 Spl.+P at best.

On firing pin size, the other end of the spectrum.  When I bought my factory .357/SB1 recently, I got perforated primers from a firing pin that was too small and traveled too far. This was a new gun straight from a dealer. Because it was an easy fix, I took it to a reputable gunsmith as that would be cheaper than the shipping back to the factory. He confirmed that the pin was smaller than he would ever use.  He shortened it slightly and I have no longer had trouble with .38's, .357's or 360 DW's.

I also shoot a 45 lc carbine barrel on a SB1 frame with zero isues. It was fit for a SB2 receiver, but I got a good lock up, so it now resides with the SB1.

If they say it's good for it, I would guess that they are sure it will take it.  Besides, there must be a safety factor concerning the pressures, or they wouldn't fit the 357 barrel on that frame.
