I would like everyone's opinion on what they think about those large caliber air rifles.  I'm talking about those that are 9mm(.36) or larger that shoot pellets up to 200+ grains.  Are they accurate?  What is the recoil like?  Are they worth the money or are they just expensive toys?  Lawdog

If you have any doubt about the effectiveness of bigbore air rifles, check this site.

Hey Lawdog & Good Morning

I am sure you are aware of this info, Lewis & Clark on their famous expedition carried a powerful air rifle with them. I just re-read about it in a gun magazine I bought last week. It also had a picture which I'd seen before.

This gun looks like a flintlock type rifle, has a big round "ball" sphere below in front of the trigger guard. They pumped it up to pressure with a hand air pump. I imagine the hand air pump might have been like the ones you see at Wal-Marts for bicycles.

I read in some history books they killed elk and whitetail and mule deer with it, and astonished the Indians with it.

Well, hope everyone takes a little time, and gets busy on here again swapping hunting tales and info on air pistols and air rifles.

Take care & good shooting.

casper_zip,

Yeah I know about the air rifles carried by the Lewis & Clark expedition.  The Beeman Museum has one like what they carried.  I've been thru their museum many time and have drooled over many of the examples of antique air rifles there.  It made me sick that they moved their plant and museum to Southern Calif. as I used to visit their place in Santa Rosa many times a year.  If you have never been thru the Beeman Museum and ever find yourself in Southern Calif. go visit.  You'll never regret it.

The newer big bore air rifles are what I'm talking about now.  I have read where the accuracy wasn't what shooters expected or what they were used to from air rifles with these new big bore air rifles.  The one I read about was the Career 707 in 9mm.  Reading about Quackenbush's big bores makes me itch to get a hold of one to try them out.  But considering what I spent on my last Weatherby(a .378) I don't foresee a Quackenbush in my near future.  Still wonder what others think about the "new breed" of modern big bore air rifles?  Lawdog
