Mule Deer prospects

Well we just don't have good pickings of mule deer here in the Flathead area, so that means I must treck east of Browning for this years general firearms season.  I have a buddy of mine in Chester, that can get me onto areas that will provide wide open country for good glassing etc.

Any of you other guy's have good mule deer closer to say Cutbank, Sweetgrass etc.

Muledeer. why bother they taste like pine trees and sagebrush.  Whitetail is what you want, barley fed, tender, succulent, the way to go.

Now Double D, you live in an area that is probably abundant in mule deer, and me on the other hand live in an area that is abundant in whitetail.  I am looking for the BIGGEST slobber knocker rack on a mule deer that I can get 

That and the fact that I have never shot a mule deer before 

But whitetail pepperstick sure does taste great though.

I'll agree with both of you.  I am of the opinion that Mulies are funner to hunt, especially ones with big ol'racks on'um.  Whitetails, well jeeze, all ya have to do is go to a field by a river or valley bottom creek and wait.  Its a good way to get good meat for the freezer, but mulies are not nearly as predictable and usually make you work for it. 
   I wish I could say I have seen some big Muley racks 'round here, but I havent had the time to do any serious scouting.

When it comes to which is better to hunt, I've often found that it truly depends on what they've been feeding on.  A Mule deer that's been browsing alfalfa tastes just as fine as any whitetail.

Of course, the mulies that eat my wife's flowers and raid our garden taste especially sweet.

  Our mulies in Wy. in my units are usually shot before Oct. 15th. I have had only one bad one in 40 years. He was shot the 13th, however one I killed the last day of that years season was on the 14th and he was excellent.  (Maybe the 13th was just bad luck.... Having eaten both whitetail and mulie, I do prefer mulies killed on hayfields. .... But we normally do our shooting well before the rut...

If you have deep pockets you can hunt with what ever outfitteer has West Butte of Sweetgrass Hills, monsters up there.

I have been hunting for 50 years, I have ate a lot of venison, sausage and jerky are pretty good, but I prefer steaks roast and stew meat.   

I am in the position to be able to compare mulie and whitetail that live side by side in the grain fields. I'll take the whitetail every time for eating.

Douglas, body wise that one right there is larger than any whitetail I have taken over here, that one looks way over 300 pounds.  Of course I could be wrong too, but I would love just to have a chance at one like that.  Don't get me wrong, I love whitetails, but I want to get out on the prairie and grasslands etc.  I finally have a rifle caliber that can reach out and put a hard touch on one of those critters.

300 pounds?!! Me or the deer.

Deer killed at my place all get weighed. He was less the 200 lbs.  If I remember correct 180 something.  Me just over 200. That scowl on my face is pre knee replacment pain!
