seating bullet?
« on: October 23, 2009, 01:07:39 AM »
I am new into reloading and wanted to get some in sight on bullet seating. I am loading for my .260 rem. now it's a ruger M77 mark II. I am shooting 120gr nosler bt with 43.5 grains of imr4350. I was playing around with seating the bullet and the nosler book said the max overall cartridge leangth was 2.8" and I am at 2.811" now and the bolt will still close. Factory specs are 2.770 but don't you want to get the bullet out as far as possible without hitting the land and grooves of the gun to make the rounds custom to your gun and more accurate.

Well, we all want more accuracy.  But it's false that all rifles, or even most, shoot best with the bullets at the lands.

It's also not true that any book or factory OAL is a rule that has to be followed or something bad will happen.

Find both a powder charge and seating depth that works from the magazine and without jamming bullets into the lands.  Most sporting rifles seem to shoot best with bullets from maybe thirty thou off the lands to as much as four times that much.
Common sense is an uncommon virtue

As stated above.
All rifles are different and the books don't take into account that some rifles have a longer chamber than others.
I have some that like the bullets all but touching the rifling and at least one that has a throat that is so long that a 140gr Barnes bullet won't even hold itself in the case mouth and it still doesn't touch the rifling, but it will cut holes if I do my part.
There is always the exception to the rule.
You just have to try different seating depths until you find what YOUR RIFLE likes.
