How much does the neck grow as you neck down?

Can I make a rough prediction how much a neck will grow in length when I neck a case down from 257 to 224?

I assume it would depend on the thickness of the case and the amount of neck-down in the process?

Or must I experiment?

Ahh, I would measure the brass then re-size then re-measure.

What are you sizing down, you will most likely have to turn the necks.

Had some feedback that you can take 25-35 Win brass and run it thru a 219 Zipper FL die (258 -224) and you are good to go, without trimming or turning the neck. As the cases are very similar, maybe that is where it doesn't matter much.

Simular to the 22 Savage High Power.

22 Savage High Power uses .227" bullets.

219 Zipper uses .224" bullets with a shorter neck.

yooper77: Over on the regular NEF Centerfire forum I started off a topic thinking about the 22 Hornet rechambered to 22 Savage HP in 224. Many suggestions later, the 219 Zipper has almost the same case capacity/performance so I finally settled on it and someone suggested it is an easy case form from the 25-35 Win without the hassle of worrying about neck thickness etc.

Trimming is no problem for me, but turning and reaming necks, not what I would prefer to do with my time, especially as 25-35 Win brass is still priced really well. So I was just hoping to get some extra expertise here to help confirm the idea that just a FL resize of the 25-35 Win without any other mods and I would be good to go.

I want one rechamber for the 22 Hornet (0.79cc) that is 224, rimmed and has substantially more case capacity than the Hornet (≤ 2.4cc), but not like the 22-250 (2.75cc) and 220 Swift (3.18cc). I want an economical rimless rechamber too, which will be the 221 Rem Fireball (1.43cc). I want to end up with three barrels, each very different, but all economical to shoot. Then I think I will be done with the 224 caliber.

Its kind of funny asking on what the neck difference would be when you need to check it anyway.  Any wildcatter knows to check the case in every aspect of the sizing process.  25-35 Winchester brass is out there, but much cheaper to make from 30-30 Winchester then you need to neck turn, so what that’s reloading.

I have resized 25-35 Winchester from 30-30 Winchester and I turned the necks, also I currently make 257 Weatherby Magnum from 300 H&H Magnum and guess what I need to turn the necks.  Neck turning and case length trimming are not a chore for me; it’s a process in order to make proper safe reloadable brass.  I feel you have a lot of time on your hands anyway, so this shouldn’t be a problem.
