Sunday is opener for general firearms.....
« on: October 23, 2009, 05:07:24 PM »
I will be headed out early Sunday morning with my partner looking for Mr Whitetail.  My whitetail buck from last year was a nice one....

My 2008 Whitetail Buck taken with a Savage Mod 99 in .308 Win @ 200 yards.

Now this year, I am looking for something a bit larger   ::)

SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!

Nice buck, Montanan.  I wish you luck on getting the monster this year.
One day and a wake up.  I went and finally tried to sight my 444 in with new rear sight and with elevation adjusted to lowest point, it is shooting almost 10 inches high at 100 yards.   >:(GRRRRRR!!!!!  Tomorrow, I will tinker with it again, but at this point, I might need to shoot the 30-06 until I get a new front sight. :-\
That means, I'll need to re-sight my 30-06 in for 180 grain bullets.
Gotta git'me a bigger ice box

My Dad is here for whitetail doe.  We went out looking around yesterday.  saw a few deers and a badger.

Dad is from Oregon and has never hunted out of state before.  He has never hunted in country as open as this for sure. He usually hunts the manzanita and buck brush in the hills of western oregon.    He asked me how could you ever sneak up on the deer out here.  I just told him you'll see.

All of you have a great time and be safe. Here in Alabama we've got another month to wait on gun season.

Douglas, you should bring him over to our area.  Alot of public land for hunting the whitetail deer, I have maps of all my haunts and areas that I hunt them in.

Glacier Veiw Ranger District
Hungry Horse Spotted Bear Ranger District
Swan Ranger District
Tally Lake Ranger District

If you need maps, let me know.

Dad, who is 82, confessed to night he hasn't been deer hunting in almost 20 years...He has been elk hunting since then, last time was three years ago.

Last time he sighted his gun in was then. We were going to go to the range Saturday, but it poured down rain.

This morning I help him stalk a doe and get with in 50 yards.  He had  put the magazine in his gun and never chambered a round.  Deer didn't spook at the click, but left the field at the sound of the bolt racking a round.

This evening get him with in 120 yards and he fires a round and the bullet hit the ground about 75 yards. Racked the bolt and fire again and hit the same spot as the first.

I gave him my rifle after that and we will go to the range tomorrow.

Remember several weeks ago I asked him how he was at walking and he told me he hoped I could keep up!  This evening we walked 3 miles across a stubble field.  We got to the road on the far side and he said he was sure glad to see the road as he couldn't go much further...glad he said that before me. :)

We put a close to 8miles today and my new knee did just fine...but I was beat.

Dad's rifle, a Savage 111 in 30-06.  I shot it across the sand bags and it put three shots touching 4 inches high at 100...inspite of a trigger pull that had to be some where areound 12 or 14 pound.  It took all my control to not jerk.  Dad fired two rounds both low and right.

Brought the gun in tonight and tried the trigger and it was still hard.  Took the rifle out of its stock, got my trigger weighs out and the trigger pull was a perfect 3 1/2 pound.  Put the gun back together and  every thing was just fine. Got no explanation.
