Stinks
« on: October 24, 2009, 11:12:31 AM »
Shot this guy last night before the dogs went after it. He was cruising my back yard and one round of 3" #4shot 410 put him to sleep. I've been wanting one to hang on my wall but two fur buyer/skinners wouldn't touch him. I'm not that experienced at skinning smaller critters so I guess I'll wait. I saw one tanned at Gander Mountain a while back for sale. I wonder how you get the stink off them. Wouldn't want to smell that in the house everyday. Think maybe you'd just get used to it? ;D

When I was a teenager, I trapped one on a rabbit set.  I pulled the trap out of a hole and then I got a big surprise.  Skunk!!  I shot it in the neck with my air rifle and ran away. He was dead a few minutes later when I returned to no smell in the air.  I could really smell it after I started skinning.  When you're that close the smell can actually make your eyes burn.  I think it's almost noxious. :-\ I stretched the hide and salted it in our unfinished basement right under my parents bedroom.  My Dad could smell it every time he went down there but chalked it up to a fabricated story of mine about a skunk visiting our garbage cans outside the basement. Finally one day he found it and once again I fabricated a story citing his own words that he wanted a skunk-skin hat someday. That was something he mentioned once in passing years before this date. I got pretty lucky and he has it still.  We soaked it in tomato juice to get rid of the smell and he has kept it on his bookshelf next to the bed for years now. I think the fabricated story worked-out in more than one way.  He holds that hide in high-esteem, I was his junior trapper. ;) Back then, some 15+ years ago, we tanned it with Oxalic acid.
Nowadays I think I would wear latex gloves, and stick a clothespin on my nose.  ;) ;D

BTW, a bit of almost completely useless info, skunks can't spray if their hind legs are off the ground.

Good luck with Pepe 'le Poo.

I think this is my third one this year. This one is a pretty nice one. Good sized compared to the others. I was getting close to getting a knife but wife said NO! She let the dogs out about 4 am last spring and the dogs found one in the yard. She didn't like giving them baths that early and the smell was BAD. I was still in bed and woke up and knew what had happened. I didn't go downstairs and help her. I played possum. ;D I've had it make my eyes burn before. I figure if the furbuyer/skinners Know better I should wise up too. Sure would like to have it all tanned out nice on my wall. I was just lucky to spot it last night before I opened the door. They can be hard to see at night. We learned to look out good first.

Lon, Sounds like a good plan but he will likely fabricate a story to get out of it. :)
I'd think the smell would have gone right up to his parents bedroom ;) I would like to be able to tan hides so they turn out soft. Guys I've talked to that tried it weren't impressed with theirs.

Had adog once that every time it went outside it would get hit with a dumb stick when it crossed the threshold of the door way. well to make a long story short it got nailed hard by a skunk one night. The next day we started making some phone calls and ended up finding "skunk be gone" at the local agway store. The stuff really works. only took one shampoo. you might try some on the hide. I would deffinately wear latex gloves when you skin it and do it outside.

2 things
#1 - I hear ya on fabricating a story to get out of it :D
#2 - I think his wife would be wise to the stories and smell ;)

Hey I just took a closer look at your picture. That dude must really stink! HE HUNG HIMSELF!

Think we could feed it to the skunks before harvesting ;)

I have shot two of them this past summer in the backyard. Both with my Handi in 357 Max using 38 Special wadcutters. They were both at night, so they were difficult to see, even in the scope. I just aimed at the white and let it go. The first one was a clean kill, did not move or make any smell. The second one wasn't as clean a kill. At the shot, it raised it's tail and took off. Being at night I thought I had a clean miss. You could smell it real strong in the yard. The next AM, I found it under my shed, which is about 10 yards from where I shot it. Evidently, it lived long enough to make it under the shed and expired there. It got buried, but the smell stuck around for two days. I never thought of tanning their hides, i was just ridding the yard of the pests that dig it up; dang varmints.

No need to fabricate any stories ;D lol. That was just one example of the many things I did back in my "Young and Dumb" days, nowadays I'm just old enough to know better.

The smell did trickle up to their bedroom. My mother complained about it for a while, maybe that's why Dad went down there when he found it. ::)  She never did like it being in their bedroom even after we washed and tanned it. ???

Thanks, Dinny

Lonny,
That's a great idea........buuuuuuuut no, I can't do it. ;D  If I brought the mask back to my supply sgt, he would give me a statement of charges for damaging gov't property.  ;) Even if he didn't, I bet he wouldn't take it back and put it in his supply locker/cage.  :o lol

1) Skin it far AWAY from the house and truck.
2) Take change of clothes with you for trip back.
3) Soak hide in gasoline to remove the smell.

Thanks guys!!!   I'm sure glad the attention was shifted away from me. Lol  ;D  I was getting a bit concerned there that Lonny was gonna talk him into freezing it for me to skin later.  ::) ;D :D ;)

That was a close one....Lol

Thanks Tim, some interesting stuff there. I threw this one in the woods. It was the best one I've shot. I need to learn a little more before I tackle it. I'd rather just pay a pro but they are not interested. Maybe that should tell me something. Those guys usually will do anything for a couple bucks. Glad I listened to my wife, THIS TIME! ;D
I know a Coon hunter and he sends skins he wants to keep to be tanned by a firm in Duluth MN. I have a nice Yote I shot and was gonna send it there. I would like to tan them myself, but not if they don't turn out right. He said the one he tried was a little hard and brittle.
