What is this plant?

I took this photo a few years ago on a hike in Cook Forest State Park in northwestern Pennsylvania.  I've never seen anything like it.  It was late October or early November, if that helps.  Are they some sort of berries?  Or maybe a Sasquatch turd?   ;D.  Thanks for any help.

We call them groundcherries, there might be a more proper name though. Very tasty!

Thanks.  I'll google that.  I wasn't adventurous enough to try them.  They did feel hard, sort of like the consistency of a crabapple.

That dont look like a ground cherry I am familar with. Some times plants in different areas may have the same name but be different. I dont know what it is.
