Got my first crossbow deer today!!!
« on: October 24, 2009, 04:46:37 PM »
Been hunting the last few weekends and today finally got a nice eaten doe within range. About 25 yds. Shot a little high and spined it but at least it didn't go anywhere. I used my PSE Copperhead 150lb, 17" 2216 (aluminum) bolts, and Crimson Talon high-speed broadheads. Not the prettiest of shots but its meat in the freezer.   :)

Nah, I'll be using it through January. I still have two more does and two bucks to take. I will say the PSE Viper Copperhead did everything that I needed it to do. I have, in the past, used crossbows with the scopes and red dots, but my Copperhead is equipped with standard pin and peep sight and I could not be happier. Old School Rules! Good luck my crossbow compadres!!!!

Congrats on your first.

I've gotten two shots, both misses. Misjudged the distance on both. OH WELL! I'll get it right yet!

I think I'm completely done rifle hunting, at least in Texas unless it is a high-priced special hunt that I couldn't afford anyway. But my revolver will still be used every so often.

Congrats, sounds like you are hooked on the xbow!  I prefer mine to all of the other methods I take deer. Nothing like hearing that solid thump when you connect with one!

I got my first deer with a crossbow on Saturday morning. I am shooting a PSE Viper with a Easton 3 Dot Scope.  This is my first crossbow and I really like it. I am hoping to  take out several hogs with this crossbow.

What series of PSE Viper are you using? Copperhead, Sidewinder, etc.....

I chose the Copperhead for the specific reason that I like open pin sights.

I'm not sure which its is. It does say Viper on the side. I bought it used so I don't really know that much about it.  It has the camo thumbhole stock and the limbs are the tpye where there is two small limbs on each side.  Its not a Horton that has one big wide limb.   It has the adjustable rear sight that you dial up for distance.  I was having trouble getting crossbow to shoot good groups.  Since I was wanting the 3 dot scope on the crossbow, I didn't think I needed the scope rail to adjust. I drilled and taped the mount for set screws so that I could lock the rail down so that it wouldn't move.  When I did that, the crossbow became unbelivable accurate. At 25 yards 5 bolts will touch each other, it would accually  shoot the vanes off each bolt. At 40 yards I can shoot a 5 shoot pattern smaller than 2"     I don't know how good a crossbow is suppose to shoot but I am very pleased with this one.

Congrats on the deer, Booyah! My PSE Viper Copperhead is solid limb except for the last few inches then they split near the cam.

Got my first ever Deer with a crossbow Tuesday evening about 4:50 PM.  Shot from about 17yds and hit exactly where the pin was on her rib cage just behind the frt shoulder. She went about 75 yds out in the field and was dead when she hit the ground. I was able to watch her run from the shot till she piled up. Knew it was a good shot as I could see about 5in of the bolt sticking out from her when she ran. She was facing me at a slight angle with her head closer to me than her rear end, and I debated about shooting in front of the shoulder, but was happy the way it worked out.

I used a Horton 150lb compound low end Xbow bought at M C Sports on sale for $179.95 a couple weeks ago. 20in Aluminum bolts with 125 grn 4 bladed broadheads bought on sale for $5.99 a package of three. Used the peep and pin sights that came on the bow. Shot it for most of a week in the back yard at distences from about 15 yds out to 45 yds.  Decided to sight it in at 33 yds and limit my shot to 35yds at the max.I'm hunting from a popup ground blind at the narrow end of my 2&1/2 acer corn field and see from 5 to 14 deer every nite. Hade some closer than her in the last few days, but she was the first shot I knew I could make a killing shot on. She's hanging in the garage now and dressed out at aprox 175lbs.  Big deer!!! There was 7 deer ther when I shot her, and I waited till she put her head down to nibble on an ear of corn.

I had to give up bow hunting several years ago due to health reasons, but this year, MI made it legal for anyone 50 or over to use a Xbow in any archery season, so I bought one and gave it a try. I'm sold on them now!!!

Just wanted to share this with all of you.  Thanks for reading this.

Thanks for sharing GreeenRiver.  Being from Mi. also I appreciate the opportunity to use a xbow.  I think it is so much fun that I may use it in muzzleloader season if I don't shoot a buck during rifle.  Unlike you in the lower (if you are in the lower) those of us in the U.P cannot use xbows in the late archery season.  Not real fond of that idea.  But good luck.

congratulations on the xbow deer Mohawk!

BTW whats the max range you guys would attempt a shot with a x bow?

Thank you, Oldshooter  :). I own the land I hunt on so I was able to "pre-sight" my xbow to where I thought the deer would come from, 25 yds. If they came in closer, no problem, and 25 yds is the furthest shot available on my main tree stand. Before the season in late September I got up in the stand and put the target block where I thought the deer would be and sighted in my xbow pin for that range while 20 feet up in the treestand. Ironically, I killed my deer literally within 10yds of where the target block was. So I knew my xbow was going to shoot dead-on. I shot high, that was my fault. The sun was in my eyes about the worst it could have been but I took the shot. Thinking back, I should have waited 5 or so minutes and the sun would have been behind the oaks and cedars and it would have not been an issue. But, thankfully, it all worked out. I have not set a longer range pin yet, but if I did, I think 40 yds would be my max.

thanks for the reply. I want a xbow but I have so many toys i cant justify it now, but it is an interesting weapon for sure!

I helped my elderly friend, Bill, find an affordable PSE Viper on eBay.  New in box w/warranty it cost $300.  He has bullseyed many targets but has not shot a deer yet with this crossbow.  I've shot Bill's PSE crossbow many times.  The trigger took a little getting used to, but the accuracy is quite good.

PSE has been building very good archery products for well over 20 years.  I hope they continue with this crossbow line because it's just too good to drop from production.
