feed problem with pre-64 M70 .270
« on: October 13, 2003, 05:52:57 PM »
I have a pre-64 model 70 in .270 WCF.  Lately, when the mag is full with five rounds, the bolt won't strip the top round off when closing.  It rides over the case.  It sometimes won't strip the 4th round off either. It usually always strips rounds 3, 2, and 1.     Is my follower spring getting weak?  and if so, where do I find a replacement?  Any other ideas?

Tom

Tom

tominboise:  Your magazine spring may be weak and need replacement - I would call Wolfe Springs and see if they make a replacement or, failing that, call Winchester directly.

In the interim, pull the magazine, disassemble it and clean it thoroughly.  Check for burrs or rust spots near to top of the magazine that might impede the floorplate moving all the way to the top.  Also, while the magazine is disassembled, stretch out the spring a little to put a bit more tension on the floorplate to bring the shells as far up to the top as is possible.

And work the magazine and action with different brands of ammo to see if any one particular brand may be oversized and catches or hangs up in the mag.  M2C and HTH.  Mikey.

Does the bolt touch the case head?  The spring should be inserted so it looks like an 'M' with the top to the rear.   Is there sufficient spring tension to hold the cartridges up at the rear of the magazine.
