tell me what i bought
« on: October 25, 2009, 04:28:11 AM »
Yesterday I picked up a nice little a-bolt in .243 win. for a GREAT price. I got on Browning's site and found it was a 1991 model a-bolt hunter. I have never seen one with a fluted bolt though. All the ones I have seen have been the squared off looking bolt. I am no browning guru so this may have been how they were made back then. Just wanting a little more info on it. The gun shoots great though. Once I got it dialed in it would shoot a quarter size group at 100 yards from a bench. This is my first a-bolt and I could not be more impressed. Also the last 4 of the serial # is Z717 if this helps. Thanks in advance.

congrats on your browning, that is a fine gun in a fine caliber. i have an a bolt ll in 375 h&h stainless stalker no BOSS and i love it. go to browning's web site click on customer service scroll down to date your firearm and look up your serial # there. as far as the bolt is concerned i think what you are calling a fluted bolt is standard on a bolt guns, mine appears to be what you described. hand load for it if you can, to get the maximum in all respects from your gun. get an extra magazine for it also and a pouch to carry it in. with proper care it will serve you a life time.

I still hunt with the abolt in .270 winchester that I bought while I was still in high school and that was over 25 years ago.  It's never let me down and it's never missed a season.

Nice purchase!
