1895 Cowboy question

I'm not a reloader but I'm interested in this rifle for a few reasons. One it's a lever. Two it's in a big bore 45-70.
My question is, With it's "Ballard Rifleing" will it shoot regular old Remington 405's accurately or do I have to make and shoot hardcast bullets?

It will shoot jacketed & cast bullets very well.

I'm itching to pull the trigger on a deal. The shells are pricey so I'll have to investigate the handloading aspect of the 45-70's.

HuntAway I had an 1895 Cowboy in 4570, and shot both thru it but, preferred the 405 cast bullets. Not because they were more accurate. Just because I liked them better.
I sold the rifle and have been sick about it ever since.

I shoot 355gr. cast gc bullets that group under 1" at 100yds, and just got finished testing some loads for the rem 405 gr. FN bullets that bored one hole at 50yds this past weekend.

I haven't tried them at 100 yet, but I would be satisfied if they stay under 2", but the reality is they should be around 1 to 1-1/2".

I have not found anything yet, that is not accurate out of this gun, cast or jacketed.

I hunt a 1995 CB and love it
405's are just fine, and easy to get.
They will pass clean through most game, but will kill 'em reel dead just the same.
When you start reloading for it you can play around with other bullets. The 300gr HP should expand better, but haven't hunted that bullet yet. Killed plenty with the 405's though.

Enjoy it, they are a blast to shoot, and more fun to hunt.

OK I touched it!!!
I couldn't bring it home today because the transfer people are on a Stat Holiday. Tomorrow it's mine!!!!!!!!!!! ;D What a sweet handling rifle even with the 26' barrel. Not bulky and shoulders and swings nicely.

I have another question if I may.

I see there are round nose bullets available to reloaders. Are they safe to use in a tube magazine of a 45-70? Or should I stick to the flatnose bullets?

.............dammm I knew I shouldn't of touched it.................. ::)

I think I'll start with the Remington 405's (factory rolled) for now and when I start reloading I think I will have to go with Speer 400's as I can't find any Rem 405's up here in Canada.

Model 1895CB 45-70. I'm thinking LuLu would be a good name for her as she's such a big beautiful girl. ;D
Also picked up a couple of boxes of Rem 405's to start off with. A Williams 5D Peep sight is on order and should be here next week with a blank for the dovetail.

Oh my what have I got myself into? ::) ;) ;D

Heaven is what you're into, 4570 is a fun cartridge, kicks like an angry mule with that leverrevolution ammo though. ;D
I just have the classing 1895, and I haven't had the chance to shoot the 405 rem's yet, but I hear they are a bit more tame.

Good luck with it, post up some pics of how she shoots when you get her dialed in. ;)

FN, HP & RN are fine to use in tube feed Levers. Just don't use pointy stuff, with exception of LEVERevolution®.

My 1895 Cowboy loves the Rem 405s. Shot some today with 1 hole groups at 25 yards - just getting it sighed in.
