.30-30 AI using W748 powder
« on: October 25, 2009, 05:37:57 PM »
Does anyone have any loads with W748 and 170grn. bullets? Im thinking i could start around 35grn. and go from there. This would be in a Marlin 336.

I think your starting point is too high.

I agree with Gavinator.  I use a lot of 748 for a lot of 30-30 loads--and accurate ones, too.  Start a few grains lower.  You may be surprised at how well 748 will work at a starting point of around 29 or 30 grains.

Just going from memory I think I maxed out at 35.5 in the 7-30 with 130 grain bullets. I realize the expansion ratio is a bit higher in the .30-30AI but case is basically the same capacity and you're talking 40 more grains of bullet.

I'd say that's way high as a starting load and might be too high as a max load.

Thanks guys, I am basing this off of max. published .30-30 loads in the books and adding 5%. 35grn. would be my max load. I should have asked for max loads, thats what i was thinking on at the time.  Brain fart on my part. Thanks for the concern about the loads, it is nice to be dbl. checked when working with unknown loads.
