160 Conis On Coon

Does anyone use 160's on coon.  They look a little small.  I was thinking of using some kind of small bucket or big can with them for coon.

Bow, more and more trappers are going to 160s for coon.They will do the job quite nicely.  Tom

160s for coon

As Bog said 160s do  a very good job on coon.   I prefer th 160  as it hits the coon right behind the skull in kill area.   I have also taken bobcats, fox, and otter in 160s and  it performed great.

I dont like them.Years ago, I was using 120's in a box.Set with the trigger jaw in and on the bottom.The trigger wires bent in and flat. I had real good luck with this set up.The 120 would get the coon behind the head.Dont look like they ever moved.  Once I suit cased a 12#'der. Then 160's were legelised.Made new boxes for the 160's.Set them the same way.80% of the time the coon would pull the trap out of the box.Now it's back to 120's, for the "Baited Coni Box Set"

We tried a couple last year and had no problems with them. Thats all we are using this year because of the restrictions on 220s.

Newt i also use 120s and last yr i took  a 37#, 35# and a 31# coon in the 120s besides a bunch of smaller coon and the coons heads were still in box.  Dont know why you have problems with the 160s Newt as   coons are still in box also with my 160s.  My boxes are 20 inches long and have a 7 3/4  inset for springs for dog proofing.  Maybe you have short boxes and coon are reaching in and then pulling out of the 160s.  I cured that by flattening triggers all the way to top horizontally and no more missed coon.  You will have some coon refuse to work it so then i use dirt holes with footholds or  else boxtraps  or grizs up in buildings.

The problem might be that I did'nt make the notches deep enough.My notches were only about 4" .

Newt,
What type of boxes were you using for the 120's?  Did they have an overhanging roof?  
and just so im clear on your trigger placement...the trigger was at the bottom and bent directly to the side rather than in a typical 'V' ?  
Also, what were ya using to bait the boxes?

No over hang,open at both ends with a trap in each end. The triggers were bent in,straight and paralel with the floor of the box.I used a fish staked in the center of the box.We have to set them so the tide (4 1/2") covers the traps at high tide.
