Couple gets White-Tailed visitor which didn’t want to leaveBy Nathan Falk, Leader ReporterPosted Thursday, October 15, 2009 in The Shawano LeaderThe Shulze family of rural Bonduel got an unwelcome surprise guest earlier this week for Monday Night Football.
“We thought there was an explosion in the house,” said Alice Shulze, who was watching the start of the game with her husband Gordon in their living room of their home, a mile and-a-half east of Navarino.
What sounded like an explosion was actually a 9-point buck crashing through their nearby dining room window around 8 p.m.
“It basically flew through the window, knocked over the TV, and went into our bedroom,” Shulze said. “Our son Jim was coming out of the computer room, and the deer met him head on. He put his arm up to protect himself as he was so startled.”
The scuffle landed Jim with a bruised arm, and a trip to Shawano Medical Center. But the deer remained - in an ordeal that lasted nearly three hours.
“We ended locking the deer into the bedroom so it wouldn’t run through the house,” Shulze said. “We called 911 and the State Patrol and the Shawano County Sheriff arrived.”
A father and son from Kaukauna, whose name Shulze didn’t have, stopped to help as they saw the deer crash through the window.
“They stayed a little over an hour, and checked on us to see if we were okay,” she said. “I don’t know their names, but they were very nice people and said they would stop in again.”
