Patience a Virtue on Successful Moose Huntby Charlie Meyers, The Denver PostPosted: 10/25/2009 01:00:00 AM MDTBrad Knutson downed this massive moose
southwest of Walden. (Special to The Denver Post)Successful hunting often is a matter of perseverance. But seldom does it require as much as a Fort Collins hunter demonstrated on a moose hunt on the opening of rifle season southwest of Walden.
For Brad Knutson, the wait and effort was well worth it.
"I spent 18 years just trying to draw a license," the 45-year-old explained. "Then I scouted all summer. I never saw the bull, but I knew there were moose in the area."
But when the day was done, Knutson had bagged a bull with a rack 45 inches wide and a green measurement of 165.
"It's 10 inches over the minimum for the Boone & Crockett record book," Knutson said, convinced that the effort was more than worthwhile.
Knutson recalled a cold, bitter day on which he and his buddy, Matt Lorek of Fort Collins, were hiking slightly uphill at 7,500 feet in very limited visibility that may have contributed to his success.
"Matt and I saw it at about the same time. I dropped down for a kneeling shot. He didn't go down, so I shot again, and he just crashed."
Knutson had one postscript on his ultimate success.
"I just want to thank the Colorado Division of Wildlife for maintaining its moose management program," he said.
