Any news from the opener?
« on: October 26, 2009, 09:28:07 AM »
Anybody back from the opener with news?  I'm headed into the Bob Marshall next weekend and curious what to expect for game and weather.

All the truck hunter got the deer running around.  When A herd almost ran me down and I was forced to defend my self and shoot a Whitetail buck.

I went out on openning morning.  Just a skiff of snow fell right before sun up, so fresh tracks were easy to find.  I got on a fresh set of tracks from an elk herd.  They were beating feat and getting out of Dodge.  I stayed on until they crossed over a ridge.  I was getting dehydrated ( I chose not to carry water because I didnt think I would be out long that morning ::)), so I turned around.
This morning 10 elk were moving across ridge right behind house.  I scoped them, but no bulls in group.  When boss heads north to Valier for bird hunting, I'll be getting at it hard.

I got a report from my bud that lives near where I'm going, he hunted the general area and saw a couple elk and a decent number of deer.  I take this as a good sign as that's more than we saw in just one day last year and I ended up tagging out.

Crossing my fingers on the weather, I'm told it was snow-free for the opener but they got a blizzard afterwards.  The temp forecast looks to be improving so hopefully the snow line won't come down on us.

This weekend I'm headed back into the South Fork area, as there are some very good elk reports of bulls still bugling up.  So we will see, as I'm making this trip alone since my partner has to work.

I saw 37 elk yesterday afternoon.  17 in one group and 20 in another.  No bulls among them, but they are moving.  I was only 20 feet from the lead cow of the group of 17.
I'll tell you one thing, my scent control and masking system is working.  I wash clothes (and anything else that I carry and can go in the washing machine) with a laundry soap that removes all scent.  I then store clothes in big plastic tub filled with sage, juniper and aspen that I collect in the area.  Finally, I dribble a little elk urine on my hunting boots.  The group of twenty were down wind and maybe fifty yards away.  They all lifted their heads and looked at me with wind blowing my scent right to them.  After a short moment, they all went back to feeding as if I wasnt even there.

Good to hear!  We were shocked last year when we bugled one in as late as this coming weekend.  Let go a single bugle and brought in a nice 6X6 from over the mountain and about 3/4 mile away.  Worked out well for me, not so well for the 6X6.
