410's in the 45/70
« on: October 26, 2009, 10:02:50 AM »
I shoot 410's in a lot of things and I want to shoot them in this Handi too. I did some shooting the other day and everything wa OK except about half the time, the ejector would ride over the rim and I'd have to dig the case out with a pocket knife.

I tried 444 cases loaded with shot today and they all ejected fine. I use the 444's loaded with buckshot in my 45LC Derringer because I shoot hot loads and the 444's headspace a little tighter.

You could load 45/70 cases with shot and they did in the old days (Used wooden capsules) but that's a terrible waste of a 45 case.

I never seem to have enough of them. The only thing I use 444's for are the Buckshot loads in the derringer and Ghettoblasters in the BFR. Now Shot loads in the Handi.

After reading this, and just for giggles I shot a 2.5 inch #8 .410 in my .45-70 Handi.  It bulged the brass and did not extract.  I poked it out with a rod.

Won't you get a horrible pattern out of this? And the 410 cases I have are small enough they fit into the chamber, right past the rim.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

You get a doughnut pattern because of the spin. Some people actually hit more ;D

This isn't for serious shooting as is. It's good for snakes. I'm going to drill and tap the muzzle on mine for my BFR choke. Then The same choke fits both and I only have to use one key.

The pattern should be pretty good then. They sure are on my BFR.
