Author Topic: Need help selecting colors (Read 2628 times)

Hello everyone,
I am mostly colorblind and need some assistance. I want to paint, coat, dip, etc my primary predator rifle. It's a Weatherby Super Predator Master in .243 Win. I have a difficult time deciding colors because I never can trust my eyes. Here are some pics I have collected online, feel free to post some other pics or describe your suggestions. I need a good universal color that I can use when there is not any snow on the ground. Primarily trying to match or blend with the southern IN woods. When there's snow, I will wrap it with something to help it blend in better. I have seen alot of homemade paint jobs that look great. I have no artistic talent and have no business painting anything myself.

I usually prefer to stick with a lighter, more open pattern like #3, possibly #1.

I like the forest green, olive drab, desert tan, and a darker brown, but in a little black for shadows. HUH, looks like military colors LOL.

Pattern wise I like #1 or 2, 3,4,5,6,7,8

I am not picky as long as it breaks it up.

If you want an airbrush to use, I have one for ya. I useally spray can and tape them my self.

Also, I would probably get paint on the lawnmower, grill, garage door, car, truck, and anything else anywhere near where I'm painting if I borrowed an airbrush. I have no business painting anything anymore. Trust me....

I do like #1 the best

Actually it would be safer to use the airbrush, They are lower pressure than a full size paint gun. Lot less over spray than a spray can.

I do like the softer colors, using the darkers ones sparingly only for shadows. I tride digital pattern once, that is a pain in the butt.

I actually used the contact type decals for my Mossberg. I will try to get a pict of it.

The Coyote and Bob cat are color blind too.
just a flat paint color will work.
As a lot of preditor hunting is done at dusk and night i would paint the face of the recoil pad a day glow color. Light green, yellow, or white. something that is lite in color and you will see, but that the animals will not when you are shouldering the gun. Some color or word on the butt that you can see or read. Write rifle on the buttstock where you put your face. Don't laugh it has saved a few rifles from being tripped over.
if you set the rifle down and it blends into the the ground and you walk away from the gun to pee, get a water, change battereis, or what have you..... you may spend more time looking for the rifle than hunting.
I have a cousin that camo'd up a 10/22 and leaned it up against a tree while tree rat hunting and has not been able to find it since.
that was in 1990 or so.

That's not a bad idea, I think I could start with painting the top of my elevation adjustment knob a bright color. Sorta like a dot on the very top. I haven't hunted after dark yet, but I do try to get into my set-up very early to catch anything patrolling at dawn and sometimes later at dusk.

I need a 10-22, where did he lose his??

Just in....I was just quoted $505 (with mil discount) to do the #1 from the company listed in the pic. Ouch, ouch, ouch......

I'll keep looking at other companies but may end-up buying at Wal-Mart.

Now how many of you are going to volunteer to do it yourselves for half-price($252.50)??

I like #7 for southern Indiana woods. But if I were doing it myself I would paint it with an oak leaf brown as the base coat and just paint some gray, tan, and a very little black in stripes. There are some paints with some texture in them that would work also and of course finish with clear coat. About $20 bucks worth of paint should do it.

In the swamp in Oriental NC.
I think the area has been logged so good luck.
I think by now even if it were still leaning against the tree it would be some paint flecks, rust and boxite. with a stainless steel bolt and a few plastic parts. I think the steel would be rust by now and the aluminium is back to the white powder boxite.
But if you are in the area. Dad will let you hunt the farm.

I'll look you up if/when I get stationed at Ft.Bragg. That's probably the nearest I'll get anytime soon.

This one I did a while back. This is why i say very little dark colors. I applied the black last and way to heavy. I also have a pict in Bigboytoys in the sticky's, The camo Mosin is a jungle pattern i came up with. It is also to dark unless using during spring.

Did you check down in Jeffersonville. With that little shop on Hamburg pike we were talking about? If you want I can stop by there and see if they do that kind of coloring. I know they were in the progress of doing a couple differet gun coatings when I first visited them.

We had a jet go down in front of the house a few years ago and dad offered the bunk room to the senior NCO's from the Marine corp but told the officers to go sleep out side.
He did bring them all coffee in the morning. Yes, the whole platoon.

No thanks, I plan on stopping-by to greet Ron when I return (2 more weeks!!!). He's a real good old man and has already coated my H&R Handi 45LC. I'm probably gonna have him coat more of my Handi's when I figure out which barrels are shooters. He'll definitely get my ULSH 20ga!!

Dinny, you know I wouldn't steer you wrong brother so do yourself a favor and go with Predator, Natural Gear, or ASAT, you could also do a Tiger stripe camo with your choice of colors and like mcwoodduck said put a light color somewhere on the buttstock or recoil pad. There's a guy on Tradgang.com that I'm gonna have dip one of my recurves and I think he does rifles also. I think his website is Camodip.com or Camodip.net his name is Lonnie and he's a great guy to deal with and I think you will be well under what you quoted above.

I'll look him up online and see what I can find. I have been looking at more dip coatings than anything so far. I like the NaturalGear too.

Just looked at his website, unfortunately he doesn't coat firearms.

I like that! Price is good also.
Only thing i would wonder about is no green. Would be excellent for a goose duck gun. If you new the areas you are going to hunt were mainly tall grass or cornfields, it would be perfect.

EDITED: I just went and looked at the full size image. There is green, but not many shadows. If it comes out like the clothes in the sample picts, I think would look ok.
