Handis and Bunnies
« on: October 26, 2009, 10:13:27 AM »
I just posted to JerryKo's post on his young beagle, and that brought up a thought.  I've hunted snowshoe hare and cottontails with .22s and shotguns, and now mostly do it with my Handis.  With the shotguns, it was no real challenge, so I started carrying my 1858 revolver, and that was fun.  Then I got into Handis, and started with them.  It's a lot more fun shooting the head off a bunny with even a .45-70 than spraying a lot of lead at it with a 10/22......and that's what you tend to do.  Hunting with a centerfire Handi, placing shots not to destroy meat, has made me a better hunter and marksman......and it is a challenge......and a lot of fun.

Collarbuttons in the 145-150 gr range at about 1200 fps work quite well out of the 45-70 on bunnies. And nutria and foxes.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

Yes Jerry, everything up here is tough.......especially the weather and the women.  Luce County, Just north of me, was named after its women. ;)  Up here, on Da U.P., "God, Guts and Guns Keep Us Free.".............and every day, I exercise that freedom.  And, I thank, wholeheartedly our members and lots of other fine people fighting throughout the world to keep it that way.  We all, those serving, and those who have served, made out a check for our lives, payable to the U.S. Government.  Thousands of those checks have been cashed to keep us free.  Never forget to honor them.

I'm sorry; I digress from the thread.  I guess I'd better quit, my eyes are too blurry, remembering the buddies I lost in Nam, to read the monitor.

Pete

Amen Pete. My dad is a Vietnam vet (Navy) and lost a friend there himself. I look up to all vets but Vietnam vets hold a special place in my heart.
