NIKON OMEGA BDC RECTICLE
« on: October 26, 2009, 01:59:15 PM »
What is everyone using for a sabot, bullett, powder combination with this scope and what results are you having. I have an Omega 50 cal with the Nikon Omega scope on it. The gun really likes the 250 xtp wrapped in a MMP short black sabot over 110 grains of BH 209 at 100 yards. I have not tried the scope any further than that as of now. I would like to take full advantage of the recticle in the future. Not probably in any hunting situations as I seldom have oppurtunities in excess of 100 yards. I have been told the XTP may not be ideal for long range shots?  Thanks Joe

I'm using a 250gr ShockWave with the provided sabot over 120gr of BlackHorn 209. The reticle works quite well with this combination. Bullet impact @ 250 yds was a bit low using the bottom circle for aiming.

I use a Barnes tipped spitzer all-copper sabot bullet over 150 777 pellets and 777 primer. Works as advertised in my rifle with that load. I have only fired it out to 200 yards, but got bulls-eyes at 100 and 200 yards off a rest. I like to scope. Took one this year with it.

Billy,

PS- the XTP is a great bullet, but as a hollow-point, it lacks the ballistic co-efficient of the more streamlines spitzer types like the Shockwave, Hornady SST, Barnes, etc. I've killed plenty of deer with both styles, but find the spitzers fly better, especially at long range, and give up nothing in performance at close range either. Just my 2 cents!

My Encore likes 120grs volume of loose T7 and a 250gr SST w/Flex tip and an Omega BDC scope. I`ve yet to shoot anything with the aid of the BDC reticle, but I am confident out to 200yds if need be. I feel the design is a great influence and cuts the time needed to make these shots beyond 100yds. IMO, you need to get some good range time with your loads to completely facilitate this BDC reticle. As mentioned earlier, the XTP style bullet lacks the BC and with the Omega scope your better off using a normal reticle. However one big advantage of the Omega is its forgiving eye relief. Having said that, if the load you use works for you and you are comfortable with it, stick with it. My load although reliable and has dropped every deer, my only complaint is how they lose thier core and spread lead fragments.
I think I`ll be switching to the Barnes TMZ for next season.
