Mossberg 500 Smoothbore
« on: October 27, 2009, 05:49:32 AM »
Has anyone ever had any success with any brand of rifled slugs grouping well out of a Mossberg 500 12 gauge smoothbore barrel?  If so, please post your groups, distances, and ammunition.
Thanks!

I always shot winchester or Federal Classics in mine.  They both shot the same. Can't remember the group size but they where deer killing accurate out to 100 yards.

Found your basic Winchester foster type slugs in 2 3/4" worked best out of mine when I had them. It's been awhile, but I'd say 4" at 100 yds from a rest, a little better with a scope. Never used any Federals, Remingtons were not accurate at all, had good luck with some of the Brennekes, they were just more expensive than was needed.

My Mossberg prefers Federal 2 3/4" , while my Ithaca 37 likes Winchester 2 3/4. Both guns like Brenneke's KO slug. All under 5 inches from a bench iron sited.
Personally, I stay away from 3'' slugs. I've found them to be extremely unplaesant to shoot and they're not that accurate from my guns.
I've not tried the saboted type from any of my smooth bores.

I have tried a little of everything. The best to date is the Brenneke KO 2 3/4. I have put a bunch of deer down with them. Problem is I have a real hard time finding them the last couple years. Most of my shots have been 15-60 yards. Everyone was a hole clean thru deer all dead in a few yards.
