Hmmm my 7400 as a deer rifle

A while back I bought a Remington 7400 in 30-06 to set up as my all purpose hog hunting rifle. I killed a 10 point buck with it last year. I brought it as a backup rifle but it was the easiest to get to when I got to the lease just before dark. I loaded it, sat down and shot the buck in less than 30 minutes. It has taken 2 feral hogs for me also. This particular 7400 functions best with full power loads and the shape of the Corelokt pointed bullets is perfect for good feeding, they are reliable in this rifle. The rifle handles well and it's Mueller 2x7 is an excellent scope. I guess I'm trying to think of a reason not to use it over my rather large collection of bolt action deer rifles. It really is a soft recoiling rifle also, hmmmm.

I try to convince myself every year to retire my 7400, also in .30-06 (and convince myself that it's just not a nice rifle). I bought it new when I was 18 years old back in 1986. It has a track record of 100%, one shot kills of every animal shot at with it (about 5 exotics and 5 hogs). It's friendly on the shoulder and my most comfortable rifle. It also has a 2X7 scope on it but made by the old Redfield company, in 1986. I have plenty of other rifles I could hunt with...but for some reason, I just won't. The perfect rifle? I guess so...for me anyway.

I had a 7400 many years ago and I guess had one of those rifles made on a Monday. The gun jammed constantly. When I went hunting I took a screw driver with me just in case I had to clear a jam. I cleaned and cleaned, changed ammo but nothing made a diiference. Remington said the gun was "fine". I finally gave up, sold it and went back to the 700 bolt after the 7400 jammed on a second shot at a 10 pointer.

I'm telling you man, the magazine and action are as simple as an autoloader gets. Easy to adjust the trigger, easy to adjust magazine feed lips, easy to keep clean. If you can't keep one of these rifles running get an H&R single shot.

Mine has never jammed in 23 years with...I don't know how many rounds through it. I do hear a lot bad comments about the 7400. I guess that's why I am always trying to retire it. But, it just works for me, and works, and works...

rick, how do you adjust your trigger?

I just took the trigger group out, cleaned up the engagement surfaces and shortened the spring by a bit more than a coil. Easy.

 Done the same with a 742 and 760. Not difficult and a pleasure to shoot.
