that's an awful big case! Try 26/4198 with a 450-480 grain slug. This load leaves a LOT of room in the case.BE VERY CAREFUL LOADING IT.

450 to 480?  Can the same load be used for 500 gr cast?  How about 405 jacketed?

Accurate Arms has loads listed with their XMP 5744 powder. Some listed loads are:
405 gr. lead bullet from 42.3 to 47.0 gr.
A Rapine 500 gr. lead bullet from 39.6 to 44.0 gr.
A Schmitzer 500 gr. lead bullet from 39.2 to 43.5 gr.
400 gr Speer jacketed flat nose from 41.0 to 45.5 gr.
I have never loaded for this cartridge and am just quoting listed loads from the Accurate Arms # 2 manual so work up slowly and good luck on finding a good load.

45-120 loads?

About 10 years ago, I was considering buying an 1874 Sharps reproduction, as made by one of the two U.S. firms in Montana (can't remember which one).
Anyway, I was surprised to see in their catalogue that they did NOT recommend ANY smokeless powder with the .45-120 Sharps case.
As I recall, the manufacturer said that the use of smokeless powder in such a voluminous case caused dangerous pressure spikes, and would void the rifle's warranty.
Perhaps that was with the powders of the day (early 1990s).
Accurate Arms' XMP5744 bulks up well, and perhaps it can be used with the .45-120 today.
But if I owned a .45-120 I'd contact the manufacturer for their take on using smokeless powder.
Not to be an alarmist, but it might be worth checking out.

I have several published smokeless loads for the 45-120 using:

Varget
H4895
Benchmark
H322
H4198

XMP-5744 is another smokeless powder that I would recomend.
