Which pack for CHRISTmas wishlist?
« on: October 28, 2009, 04:02:10 PM »
I'm thinking about putting a backpack on my CHRISTmas wishlist this year and am wondering which one(s) to consider.

I like the idea of an external frame that can also be used by itself, like a Medium ALICE pack, but I didn't like the weight and bulk of the ALICE pack when I had one.

I would prefer to get away from zippers if possible, or get a pack with good quality zippers if it has any.

This pack would be used for a possible BOB, hiking/camping and be expected to handle heavy use!

Thanks for any/all recommendations!

Kelty and Jansport make quality external packs. A lot of times Campmor will have them marked down. The main thing is to make sure it fits you. Torso length is the biggest thing. (it's basically the length of your spine.  Backpacker mags website probably has a diagram, either that or REI.  A quick way is to take your height in inches, subtract your inseam, and divide what's left by 2 and you'll be close-e.g.  6'=72"-34" inseam=38" divided by 2 equals a 19" torso length.  This, plus waist/chest size is very important in having a comfortable carry.

If money is not an issue look at Kifaru  or Mystery Ranch some of the best made packs out there.  I have a Kifaru G1 Zulu with waist belt and fancier lid,   the G2 Zulu is even nicer.

Don't know what your budget is but take a look at Badlands or Horn Hunter packs.  I have one of each and depending on where I will be hunting determines which one I'll take.  They are both lifetime guarenteed and are repaired no questions asked.  Worth checking out but be forewarned they are not inexpensive.
