hi, does anyone have any loads for a 44 mag with a 250 grain KSW bullet using green dot? Read an article by Paco Kelly using green dot but haven't found many loads. Thanks,

This probably means that it's not a good powder for 44 magnum.

claybyrd: my powder burning rate chart shows Alliant's Green Dot to be slightly slower than Winchester 231 but slower than Unique. So, as the Questor said, it's probably not a good powder for the 44 mag. If you are using a Keith style semi-wadcutter one of the better faster burning powders for that bullet in that cartridge is Unique. HTH. Mikey.

In my opinion, Green Got is a "sleeper" powder in the 44 Magnum. It is the most accurate powder I shoot using the RCBS 44-250-K bullet (approximately 262 grains cast from wheel weights) in my Ruger SRH. I am loading 7.0 grains of this powder with a CCI-300 primer. Velocity from the 9.5" barrel is right at average 923 fps. Accuracy is mostly 1.0 inch at 50 yards for 3 rounds. Five rounds will open the groups slightly. I shoot this load from my bench at a 5.5"x11" steel pendulem at 100 yards using double action. It will rattle this pendulem the vast majority of the time! My FAVORITE light load for my Ruger SRH 44 Magnum. This load is safe in my handgun, but be careful and research other data for Green Dot and the 44 Magnum. Good-luck...BCB

I use 5.5 grains of green dot with a 235 grain swc that i cast from wheel weights and water quench. This load is so good, i hardly use anything else. I like green dot so much, it's about the only powder i buy anymore because i use it in everything i load. I use it in my 45/70 and 30/30 for reduced loads that are very accurate. I bet you'll like it.

It all depends on how much 'kick' you want, or in my case, don't want. I settled on 5.5 to 7 grains with everything from a 115 grain bullet to a 165 grain. The 5.5 grain load gives me accuracy to 100 yards (with no drop) and the heavier bullets have enough punch left to knock over steel targets, although they 'barely' fall. I use 9 to 11 grains in my 45/70 loads with the same results, they shoot flat to 100 yards and will knock over steel plates, but they fall in slow motion. Recoil is mild, and penetration is decent when i've shot into 2" lumber, but i sure wouldn't hunt with these loads, they're just fun to shoot targets with.

I used to use Green dot for cast bullets in my 41 mag 'cause I had a lot of it. Can't remember the load. I'd expect Alliant would have data on cast bullets for 44 with all likely powders. My old Hercules booklet shows 9.5 gr GD with 240 gr cast ,and 8.7gr for 240 gr jacketed 7.8 gr for the 265 jacketed. You might start with the 240 gr jacketed load and work up very carefully.

Also, try emailing Paco directly. He was most helpful to me regarding the 41 mag and heavy cast bullet loads.

The Alliant Reloaders guide has a lot of loads listed for the .44 mag and greendot. Try a starting load of 7.5 grains.
