It all depends on how much 'kick' you want, or in my case, don't want. I settled on 5.5 to 7 grains with everything from a 115 grain bullet to a 165 grain. The 5.5 grain load gives me accuracy to 100 yards (with no drop) and the heavier bullets have enough punch left to knock over steel targets, although they 'barely' fall. I use 9 to 11 grains in my 45/70 loads with the same results, they shoot flat to 100 yards and will knock over steel plates, but they fall in slow motion. Recoil is mild, and penetration is decent when i've shot into 2" lumber, but i sure wouldn't hunt with these loads, they're just fun to shoot targets with.
