Handi and 360 Dan Wessons
« on: October 29, 2009, 04:54:26 AM »
I have been working on loads for my .357 Handi SB1 using 360 Dan Wesson brass for a few months now and have had OK success with it. Accuracy was never great, shooting about 2.5 inch groups at 80 yards.  I guess I finally put enough rounds through it because it came togethor yesterday.  180 grain XTP's over 19 grains of Lil' Gun in 360 Dan Wesson Starline brass got me a 1 inch, four shot group at 80 yards.  I strongly feel my shooting ability and eyesight are the two reasons why it wasn't a one-hole group. It is officially a winner!

Brian Congrats...

It took me a while to find the itty bitty group load in my old 357 mag handi ..

A dirty rifle or broken-in barrel will do it everytime.

I have a plan to take one of those 360 Dan Wesson cases (1.410") and neck it down to 224 using a trimmed off 7mm TCU die (1.4") to get a .284 neck, then use a regular 221 Fireball FL die (1.400") to get the .224 neck. It will be a cheap wildcat project.

I get the best groups from my stock 357 handi barrel with cast lead 38 special loads. One hole usually. I use 360 dan wesson brass loaded with 158 Speer unicore soft points and a stout charge of 2400 for 2250 fps. Accuracy is good. A bit over 2 inches at 100. Fine with me. Tried other powders like blue dot, aa1680 but the 2400 is the best so far. Just got a 26 inch, very full choke 410 pardner that my 357 fits on perfect so I don't have to keep swapping my 45-70 barrel. Life is good.

I guess I should have had more faith in Tim when he wrote about it taking a while for some barrels to settle down, I was beginning to think I would never get groups that I was really happy with.

I'm going to get a second .357 barrel fitted to an extra frame I have.  I hope it gets groups like yours with .38 Specials as I intend to use it for a small game rifle.

Hey Bobby,

I thought about it, but I was too anxious to get working on my loads when I bought the gun, so I just went with the 360DW.  I already have plans to Max one and I already bought my brass and started looking at data.  That will be next year.  Right now I need a chrono and an RCBS Lube-A-Matic, so there goes my extra cash for a few months.  BTW, that's a pretty sweet group in the photo!
