35 Whelen range time...not 2009 barrel
« on: October 29, 2009, 09:22:08 AM »
Thanks to dpeahoy, I was able to add a 35 Whelen barrel to my collection.  Been tough getting to the range(truck needed new eng), but got out today.

First shot low at 25.  Made adj, bullseye.  Shot again for the heck same hole just made it oval.  Looking good.

Two shots at 50 very high, but touching.   :) :)

One more shot,...opps too low re-adjust.

Four shoots all touching near bullseye. ;

Now it all goes down hill,...at 100, I dont know to blame it on me, or if the rifle likes to shot clean, but of 4 groups the best was 1.75 (1st)and the worst 3.25" (last)  It is averaging about 2.25 with dirty math. From the previous shots I had expected better, but still pleased.  The barrel barely warmed in the cool 50 degree weather, and shooting groups and walking the lonely range to check and repost targets.  Using O-ring on forearm also.

So I wonder if a cleaning and another range session will help figure it out.

Details:
250gr Remington Factory loads chronied about 2430fps from 10 ft.
Of the two boxes, 9 failed to fire, but at this point I'm blaming the ammo not the barrel, because I have had soooo many remington
9 1/2 primers fail.  And I left 6 unfired to decide whether I use for deer season or not.  That leaves me 25 good fireformed pieces of brass to reload with.  I will be using the Hornady 200gr SP and Winchester primers tho. And if they shoot well enough, I will resight and use for hunting instead.  But as I stand I have a POWERFUL 100yd deer rifle if need be.  With those groups I wont feel comfortable shooting past 125.  Heck they might not even go boom. ::)

And I sure must have gone soft shooting those 357maxi loads, cause the Whelen made the shoulder a little sore.   ;D  But I like knowing when a rifle goes off.  No,...I know some are thinking I started flinching and that led to the bad groups toward the end,...but with the fail to fire loads, I observed no flinching other than hammer vibration thru the scope.

If you don't like the Whelen, you could just trade it for the .270 Ultra Comp I just bought. ;)

I can't share any secrets on my 2006 barrel, the previous owner shot 12 rounds of Rem 200gr ammo with no problems, 1½" 100yd groups, the 30 rounds of Whelen Improved fire forming 200gr gas checked cast bullets I shot thru it at 100yds all went inside 2½", I'd shoot the lighter bullets thru it and see how they do, maybe it just needs some more shooting or maybe some flitz or JB lapping, could have a rough bore and as it got more fouling build up, accuracy went south. Mattparliament's 2006 Whelen barrel shot the 225gr TSX into less than ½" with RL15. FWIW, my RMEF Whelen shoots "1 groups with handloaded 250gr spitzers.

Well from your first post you zero'd at 25 yards, this is fine, but you need to zero at 100, and in most cases when zero'd at 100 you will be low at 25 yards.  You can fine tune that 35 Whelen and it will not only be a better deer gun than you ever thought, but an outstanding elk and moose gun as well.

I will add that mine was doing about 1" three shot groups at 150yds when I used it two years ago to take 4 deer useing 200gr factory rem ammo.
All were head shots.
I did miss one that was on the run free handed at about 150 yds IIRC.
That one was not aiming at the head.
Put it up because of a scope problem.
Switched scopes and while sighting in I did start having the famous Rem FTF problem with their ammo.
After pulling the bullets and switching to Win primers and re-seating the bullets I have not had another FTF round.
It is still shooting 3 into 1" at 150 with the Win primers.
The 35W is a very good round.

Actually I re-zeroed at 50 and with the bigger groups Im plus or minus 1.25 at 100.  I like rezeroing like that with an unknown caliber just to learn my drops.  Dead on at 25 was almost 3 inches high at 50.  Rezeroed for 50 and it seems nearly same a 100.  I cant agree more it is a great round for moose and elk.

My Handi whelen definitely loves RN bullets. Spire points it shoots ok, but the 200 gr and 250 gr RN's are just the thing for it.

I believe the older military sighted in .308s at 1000 inches, something like 27 yards and were good to 200 plus.  Is this correct?

No response from Richard? ???  Lets see if I can fill in.  " Them barrels is just like wimmins, got to find the right gift to make em purr."  When ya get time, try some different bullets and see which shoots the best , then play with different powders.  I'll bet ya find a good combo there Jerry.  That and some breakin in couldn't hurt, except the shoulder. ;D  Hope she pulls together soon.  DP

Spent somemore range time today.  Good thing is all my partially neck-sized winchester primed brass went bang, but the 200 grainers dont like 2500fps.  About 2 inch groups at 100yds.  I have them seated VERY long but not touching.  How is anyone else loading 200gr hornady sp's.  May keep same charge just change seating depth for now.  The terminals at 100 look devastating.  12" round hole into muddy bank with about 9" of penetration.  Bullet is keeping about half its weight.  I dont want to push it any faster with this one though and would like to stay 2300 to 2500fps max.  The 357maxi can almost do this and shoots half the group size.  :)
I had to have a Whelen though.  LoL
