Author Topic: Woman killed by coyotes in Canada...but they are so cute!!! (Read 3632 times)

Well, this news article has "coyotes lack fear of humans" written all over it. "This is an isolated incident", ranger Rick trying to play it down.

I don't care what they say, coyotes are just plain dangerous around people, and if folks don't wake up for the need to eradicate them near human populations, we will continue to read about "these tragic occurrences".

Carry in National Parks in Canada should be the law. People saw it happen but no one was armed.

I am sorry, but this just riles me up!!! This is one of the reasons I want to hunt them.

Not sure about the coyote population in N.S. but here in Manitoba there are a ton of them. I own land up in the Interlake part of the province and they are every where. Laying in the shack at night at night they are all around you howling all night. You see way more coyote tracks than deer anymore. The general thinking is shoot them all. As for carrying a sidearm in a national park or anywhere in Canada is a big nono. Even on a remote hunt up in the bush you cannot legally carry a handgun for backup. Thanks to the Liberals and their BS gun laws. I think it is going to be open season in Cape Breton for coyotes and the rest of the country.

Yes that is the way to do it, I shoot a few every year and like to get more. Some time ago two coyotes ganged up on my Springer
Spanial. I got one with my 22 but the other got away, they almost killed the dog. I got stuck with a big vet bill to stitch him up.

I think that alot of people think coyotes make thier living eating rodents and other small vermin. I am sure if they run into a mouse, they will kill it and eat it, but they mostly feed on bigger things. Young deer seem to especially high on thier diet around here. While out in OK on the PD shoot a rancher lost a new born calf to a pair of coyotes. It is a small step from a deer to a person. My wife is especially scared of them. We were setting on our deck back of the house and one crossed the field behind us about 600 yards out. My wife lost sight of it and she started to panic. I went in and got my Rem 870 super mag, so she could enjoy the rest of the evening outside.

We had no coyotes here until the big freeze in '77 and '78 when some made thier way across a frozen Miss River. They are every where now.

20 some years ago, I watched a a pack of coyotes on Specie mesa in Colorado kill a healthy mule deer doe across the meadow from me. They came out in the meadow behind it and herded it to a trail through the brush at the edge of the north side of the meadow. On the edge of the meadow the rest of the pack was waiting and jumper her when she got near. From watching them work, they had done this many times before.

We do have coyotes here, but they are not seen a lot. Wolves hunt them, so they keep a low profile. Inn Tennessee, I've seen them hunt and kill grown Whitetail deer. I have taught my brothers how to hunt them, and now they are bringing in pelts regularly all winter. My uncle used to hunt Foxes with hounds. When the Coyotes moved in the foxes became scarce. I finally convinced him to use his hounds to hunt Coyotes.

They were close enough to hear it and call 911...I don't think I would ever get another night's sleep after hearing that. She died later in hospital.

Everyone needs to remember that coyotes east of the Mississippi are not native. They did not migrate east in any significant manner until the advent of roads. They had always tried to come east thru Texas, but they had to travel thru a killing field on the Edwards Plateau where everyone, and I mean everyone, was out to kill all coyotes on site, and they were very successful for about 40 years until they slacked off in the 70s, and of course, coyotes have spread throughout Texas in large numbers.

In NC it is open season on yotes, anywhere that discharging a firearm is legal. My brother has seen two around his farm in the past month. He has 4 small daughters adn I have every intention of shooting everyone I see, even if I'm on the stand and it means passing up on deer.

I'm old and feeble minded....please correct me if I'm wrong. It was C-68?? C-67?? Needs to get repealed. We, Canadians and U.S. alike, need to stand firm together and get this corrected in both countries for the sake of our kids and their future generations.

My Handi .357 Max has become my coyote silencer of choice. Works well.

In Virginia, they are getting to be a big problem and we have a continuous open season. I haven't noticed where they have gotten brave. The darn things are the devil to hunt, but I trap them on my farm.

This is gonna be an interesting year with those damn dog hunters because I'm not pulling my traps this year. I may wind up with a Red Bone Coat.

Now...if we only had a continous open season on DOG HUNTERS that can't read posted signs

Peter, a couple of years ago I was bear hunting on my own property surrounded by miles of private property. I had a nice bear hitting the bait. I would guess 300 to 400 lbs. Hound hunters turned their dogs loose on a road a half mile north of me. The dogs crossed my property and the acreage of 4 neighbors that I'm aware of.....about 600 acres of private land. The bear was gone for good. The stupid part is I could be prosecuted for shooting their dogs.

I know. The sad part i, I don't mind hunting with hounds. I just hate slob hunters.
I've been fighting it for years. I have one hunt club that thinks they lease the world.
Every time I run them off I hear, "the dogs can't read the signs"..

A lot of dogs got lost last year

and I had another discussion with the hunters. One fell down, accidentally. Then they started going in when I wasn't around. Caught them one day and had two locked up. Then they started letting the dogs loose right on the line.

Sure hope none of thos dogs wander into a Coyote snare. It would break my heart

I've run hounds, beagles on bunnies, all my life, and my dogs have never, NEVER trespassed on private property they didn't have permission to be on. It's a matter of being responsible. Around here they slowly drive the gravel roads looking for bear tracks and let the dogs out where they find them. Regardless.

I have the same problem with snowmobilers running my property after coyotes. One collided with a 9 ga. high tensil hot fence and took 30 stitches in his leg. I'm lucky I didn't get sued

I have 2 packs of them in my area. Like Sourdough said, I noticed all my foxes are gone now. Coyotes are getting more brave all the while, even comming up to the cabin door. On their kills, they take bones and all. It seems to get worse as the weather gets colder in the winter. Years ago, they would run as soon as they spotted you. Now they stand and stare. I think that in my area, they have interbred with domestic dogs and are loosing the fear of man. Stupid laws claimed another victim.

Unfortunate part is the coyotes will probably come after us red-meat eaters first...they don't want to mess with someone who tastes like a carrot...
I've probably blown some opportunities to see deer or turkeys, but I'll take a poke at a coyote anytime regardless of the weapon.
We have very few fox around here and it seems like they are denning closer to town or farmplaces to maybe keep the coyotes away.

I don't know where you get your info, about coyotes traveling east through the Edwards plateau., what about the ones in Okla. and Kansas?
i guess Texas is the only way east for a coyote. Who told you people in Tx stopped killing coyotes ever. Wake up and smell something.

pete, it's C-68 and your right. We need to do something. Being lawbiddig gun owners in Canada we are required to registar all firearms. That includes any air rifle that shoots over 500fps. I for one will spend most of my free time on a search and destroy mission this winter. Won't worry to about hides either. Not w3orth anything anyways.

You're right, coyote in sight, whatever is in hand or close by goes to work. Wolves here are another problem. You're not allowed to even harass them. It is strange though, some pass away rather quietly. Must be some kind of a disease, like lead poisoning.

Get some good saltwater wire leader and hang meat about 5 ft off the ground with a large trebel hook yotes hang themself on the hooks when they jump for the meat (chicken liver works good) just make sure your neighbors dont have large running dogs.

So when was the coyote not found east of the Rockies? Lewis and Clark seemed to mention them. Called them the smaller prairie wolves? And what about before the white man was there to stop there advance through Texas?

As far as I know they weren't in the Pacific Northwest before white people, but I THINK they were in Southern California. Wolves and coyotes don't mix well, and a grey wolf will kill a coyote very very dead. But I don't know of a time they weren't on the central plains in the last 15,000 years.
