AND THE WINNER IS!!!!!               MARLIN XL7, in .243,  almost bought the 25-06, only reason I didnt was I had 2 boxes of .243 shells and a set of reloadin dies, plus from what I've been readin the Marlin and Savage barrels inter change, so this means that I can buy a different barrel and change calibers, at least from .243 to .308, .22-250, .223. ( if I'm rite)
 
 The local gun store had them for $309 with the black stock and scope mount, How could I go wrong, you cant hardly buy a used center fire for that.
 
 Already adjusted the trigger and mounted the scope so get it sighted in and look out coyotes.
   
             ( Oh yea, thanx for all the input guy's, ya'll really made it interestin and learned a lot also.)

.223 won't work.  Different bolt face...etc.  I like the walnut stocked Marlin.

I haven't researched this and could be wrong, but I don't think it is like swapping barrels on a 10/22.  I would bet that the barrels are threaded in, and need to be accurately head spaced etc. each time you switch barrels.  Maybe someone will weigh in on this...

Exactly. I've been told that the Marlin and Savage barrels are interchangeable. If that's true, then yes, the barrel on the Marlin would by default be threaded and have to be head-spaced each time a barrel was changed.

 Most of in barrel changin info I been readin was on the savage thread, and you are correct about the barrel being threaded and the head spacing issue.
 
 thers also a link to a Marlin owners web site in the marlin thread and they have mountains of info on the XL7.

Several years ago, I walked into my friend's pawn shop and he immediately reached under the counter and came up with a Rem. 700 in 30-06.  The stock was broken, the barrel was full of mud and it looked to have been run over.  He sold it to me for next to nothing as a project gun.  I took the stock off, soaked it in a tub of hot water, then broke it down and cleaned it.

I bought a cheap composite stock, a $50.00 scope, some cheap OTC ammo and went to the range.  My first group, off center was just over an inch.  Consider half of that me at least.

By  the way....he's offered me several times my money back.....

nothing wrong with a remington good shooters thats for sure. almost any of the major makers will give you a great product. i will say that i have never seen any that will outshoot a savage out of the box. most people do not like the lines but i have a few and they are indeed great shooters and with their new trigger systems they are great.

remingtons out shoot all my wichesters in the same calibers. but hard to beat the beauty of a featherwieght model 70.

Congratulations on your new Marlin. I've heard a lot of good feedback about it, and for the price, it sounds like a screaming deal. Yes, the barrel changes out like a Savage, and from what I've heard uses the same threads even.

I have rem. 700 , win mod 70 savage and Ruger 77 . If i were to get a new rifle it would be the Ruger hands down .
