Beautiful, and very fast! Neat, unique and a Kewpee to boot. I have not seen some of these brass accessories before. You have me thinking.

Is it just a decoration, or does it have a function?

At first I thought it was a brass pin that had been threaded to accept 'down bolts' that screw in the pins and go up to accept what ever type cap square hold down fastener you like ..... maybe one of those little fishhook type clips on top . No clue if it has any merit ? BUT I LIKE IT ! alot .

More brass ....thats good enough for me .

Thinking about building a larger South African Miniature Cannon Club gun in 69 Cal. I have a piece of 2 1/4 dia. stock that wants to be something! If I scale off the 50 cal, 2" dia, the 69 should be 1.36 inches longer, which equals 12.25 in. long.

How much 'artistic license', can I take and still stamp it SAMCC? I'd like to add an inch or more.

If you scale it up, it would just be a model of the SAMCC gun at 112.5%.  If you are making them with the 32 pounder muzzle, then they aren't exactly the SAMCC gun, although close.

It's your call.

Sure make it a South African Miniature Cannon Club Pattern and call it that, its the pattern that SAMCC uses.

I have started working on the carriage for my South African Miniature Cannon Club cannon carriage.

I have 2 in x 4 inch x 7 inch white oak blocks to use. These blocks are all quarter-sawn--the growth ring goes across the width of the blocks. I want quarter sawn for the cheek pieces to reduce warpage.

Since I have very little wood working equipment I have to go up to Southpaw's shop  and use his equipment.  With Ernie's help the blocks were ripped 5/8 inch thick.

I made cutting templates by drawing  the carriage parts out full scale on an old file folder.  Then I cut the template out and taped them to my wood.

Once I got the templates taped down, I drilled the trunnion holes.  Then I roughed the wood out with a band saw.  I made the cheek pieces two parts to help reduce warpage.

Next I will drill the holes for the carriage bolts and then turn the axles.

Double D,    I'm glad to see someone besides the 'makers' building a gun carriage!  When you marry a carefully made, solid, white oak carriage with a great looking tube, you will hopefully provide some inspiration to several boards member who have always wanted to create something unique, but just haven't made the time yet.  You heard me correctly.  When many activities compete for your time, you must make the time for carriage building, not try to squeeze carriage building in between other commitments.

Thank you very much for including in-process photos.  Maybe Mike and I are the only guys who really love the story they tell, but we think not.  Most people have some desire to see how you achieved the goal of a nice looking, completed gun.  That pleasant smell of working with white oak comes partly from the tannin exuded by that wood.  I call that pungent smell my 'back-to-work', alarm clock.  Every so often I fidget with my glasses.  When I do this, I smell the pungent, yet pleasant, wood smell that reminds me:  "You've had your lunch, now get back to planing more white oak, or turn off Fox News and get back to scraping more white oak."

Nice pics, DD.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,

-22?  Oh temperature, not fingers lost. Penguins gone Snow birding to Phoenix!  Supposed to get down to -27 tonight!  Was out inthe Shop tonight working the transom.  Sure glad we put the 12 inches  of insulation in attic out there.  I will be able to workout there this winter.

If any of you guys get this barrel from Brooks, drop me an email and I will send you the cutting templates.

Built axles today.

I marked the center on the end of the axle and wrapped the wood in shim stock (diet Pepsi can) put the piece of wood in the four jaw chuck on my lathe.

I used the jaws of the chuck to move the axle center point in line with the point of tailstock center.

I used a standard lathe tool for a cutter.  I set the tool up just like for any metal cutting operation.  Chuck the work area as close to the chuck as possible to avoid flex, even in white oak.  Make sure the tool is sharp.

I turned the speed up- 1000 rpm and took light cuts.  I also marked the axle with a magic marker so I could see my cut as I worked

Be sure if you rough the axles out with a bandsaw to leave a little extra wood.  I got too close and had to make may axles slightly undersized.  No problem just make the trucks to fit.

I also squared up the axle faces and ends.

Next wheels.  The South African Miniature Cannon Club cannon has brass trucks.  Garrison carriages had metal trucks, Naval guns had wooden trucks.  I think I will make a Naval gun carriage

Way to go!  And on a metal lathe!  I spent all day on my lathe too.  I'm working on a wooden 1/2 scale Spanish 10" mortar that Cannonmn was good enough to provide drawings for.  I'll post pics as it comes together.

Michael/DD,
Does the new SAMCC barrel with the 32 pounder muzzle have correct preponderance?  I went back to the plan thread and added a warning saying that the SAMCC muzzle style is muzzle heavy and to locate the trunnions after the barrel is turned and drilled.

George,

The barrel Brooks-USA sent has good perponderance, muzzle points straight up when held by trunnions. Michael didn't make the full SAMCC "Target" muzzle swell, it's a bit lighter. It's not the standard smaller swell of a British 32 PDR either.

Built the wheels this evening.

Started by drawing the wheel diameter on the wood with compass. I drilled a hole through the center point of each wheel with a 3/8" drill.  Then roughed them out with my  saber saw.

I put a length of 3/8" all thread in the three jaw chuck of my lathe.  I faced and center drilled the end of the all thread.  After bolting two wheels on the all thread I ran the live center in to hold the work.

I cleaned up the diameter and ran it down to the  pencil line.

Then I smoothed them up with a file and put a chamfer on the edge.  I also turned them  around on  the madrel and chamfered the other edge.

Next the axle holes.

I took each wheel in the three jaw and with a forstner bit in the drill chuck drilled the axle holes.

Caution here, don't drill all the way through the hole you will chipp the wood out...don't ask!

So here's where we are at. Starting to look more cannon like.

Next drill the holes for the side and cross bolts

Just to be clear, I know engine lathes are for making metal chips, not wood chips.

This entire carriage could be built with a saber saw and drill press. There are very few critical measurements in this carriage.  It can be measured and laid out with a ruler and it doesn't matter if your mark on the north side or the south side of the ruler mark. just use the same side. The drawing shows decimals but the closest reasonable fraction is fine

Saw the notches and steps with a saber saw.

Drill a holes and glue in dowels for the axles.

Make the wheels by roughing out with a saber saw. Drill the axle holes in the wheel and make a mandrel to go through the hole to chuck in the drill press.  Shape the wheels with a pattern maker rasp or a sureform rasp.  Finish with finer files and sand paper.

You might also be able to make the wheels with a hole saw/drill. 1 3/4 for front, 1 1/2 for rear.

Drill the holes for the hardware. I bought some  10-24 x 4 inch long carriage bolts to bolt this thing together.

The next steps to finish should be simple shop tool work.

If you want to build a field carriage for this barrel, drop me an email and and i will share some plands with you that can be adapted to this barrel
