The paint is not tacky this morning, but it is gritty.  If it had been windy the past couple of days I would say it is dirt blowing in under th shop door.   I will let this coat dry for another day and see if it can be sanded.  If so, I will apply another coat and evaluate...but it's looking more and more like a trip to the hardware store and color matching!

Is it coarsely gritty or finely gritty?  I don't remember how finely ground the pigment is; could it be too coarsely ground pigment?  And I think 60° is a little cold even for commercial paint.  Maybe bring the pieces into the basement for a little more warmth.

finely gritty, and do think it is the pigment, and it's actually in the 70's in the shop.

Well, maybe put the pigment in your tumbler along with some ball bearings and let it run overnight.  Then make a new batch of paint.  Or just hit it with some fine sand paper and knock off the tops.

Have you added a second or third coat?  Did that improve the coverage?

The second coat did improve the coverage and dried faster. Evaluation may be delayed a few days as it may be to hazardous to go out to the shop!

Take some pigment to a good paint shop.

Have the oldest , crotchest guy there grind , mix and blend your paint to order . Make HIM write ...whatever color you instruct him to write on the lid .

Call it good and debate to the death what the color looked like 300 years ago , stand your ground Marine .

If they dont have a time machine and a nice cammera we will never know .

Of course the big talkers never have a time machine . End game you win ,send them packing .

BTW I just bought a minty H&R M-1 Garand ! I'm dying to shoot it but we have bad weather coming here too . Today was nearly 80 tomorrow rain , snow , cold temps .

Douglas , I appreciated your attempt to use old paint recipe , and would have liked to see it work. Nothing is lost when you encourage others to try old methods , the wide  range of subjects on this forum keeps it alive , and the best cannon site out there.
I promise I'm not smirking at the thought of you digging that gunge off . You can trust me on that can't you . ::)

Trust a Scotsman, that's a question that never need be asked!!!

It was worth a try, but it's time to move on...new things were tried.  Some worked some didn't.

My skills are crude and not on par a with some who post their work here and some who don't post their work here and should!!!.  It doesn't matter...I am active building...and that is all that matters.

I think the weather was too cold for the oil to set up.  Save some paint and paint a scrap once it gets hot up there.

I have 2 boxes of Calcimine  paint . Just add water and go .  Mother hated that type paint , could not wash walls .  I used to have yellow  but the kids got to use it on an old wood box they had as a play house in the 70's .  I think the 2 boxes I have left are blue.   Want to see a picture ?

and now he will try to invent the wheel again  ;D

all way back at the late stone age they could make a wheel

thomas , take a log and cut 4" thick slices from it
then drill a hole in the center and you will have your wheel

even a swede can do that , but ok we know how to make vodka also  ;D

was this friendly enough ??

So did you take any pix with more than one coat of the home made paint?  How about some with the hardware store mix?
