I think they would look better black, too.

Douglas is a realist, and history dictates that the trucks not be painted. Do you think that it's an easy thing for him to muster up enough self control, and restrain himself from slapping some paint on those wheels?  :P

I do agree though; it is a very good looking rig! :)

I knew it would look nice, Douglas, indeed, very, very nice.  The important thing, however, is that I believe you have inspired a raft of new builders among the membership.  By my count, you now have the highest number who have guns recently done or in-process at this time.

The trucks on the guns on HMS Victory were linseed oiled, so are these ones.

Doug it looks great ! wil there be any patinaing or aging on the carriage ?

Gary

Closest this come to aging is that it was done by an old guy.  I sanded each board separate so the weren't flush and flat.  about an hour after painting, I drug a dry brush the length of the painted surface.  This put brush strokes in the paint and smoothed out the runs drips.  I did not sand between coats.

Douglas is a realist, and history dictates that the trucks not be painted. Do you think that it's an easy thing for him to muster up enough self control, and restrain himself from slapping some paint on those wheels?  :P

Time place guys, time and place.  No pimp gun this one.

there you got a real classic beauty , just one miss there
but its not your miss , the trunnions is too long .

SAMCC Serial number 1 has long trunnions.  I gave some thought to cutting them down and decided to leave them as is.  In 35 or 40 years at my estate auction my grand daughters will be able command a premium for this rare variation. You guys start saving you dollars, the little darlings will use your money to pay college tuition.

Besides it's not the length of the trunnion that makes the cannon...

Thanks, everyone for the kind remarks, but " I ain't done yet!

Not for nothing, but I kind of think the reverse would be cooler (perhaps that's just my nature talking).

It turned out really nice.  The unpainted wheels do look funny, but there's a reason for them not being painted, actually two reasons, I'd guess.  1 - the paint would just wear off in actual naval use, 2 - wheels are the first thing that would wear out on a carriage.  The first is the most likely reason they didn't bother painting them (no evidence to support these as actual historical reasons, just another cannon on a naval carriage that has seen some use on wood decking as well as other surfaces).

The pix of the assembly is visually strong and doesn't need to be as large to carry; whereas, the details need the larger size to be seen.

I dunno..... Doug is proving very proficient at exploiting my fears of inadequacy in both quantity and quality. To be fair, I work long hours and Mrs. Grymster is a tough and unrelenting master of my free time, so I still haven't done much of anything successful in my quest to build a carriage. In fact, after several miserable attempts at planing my wood to thickness on my cheap router table, I'm out-sourcing that work next week. Hopefully, I can make some progress after that.

Meanwhile, Doug has built a beautiful carriage and I hope to emulate his in some small way.

Planing? Hey, why didn't I think of that, wow!.

I just resawed the wood to width with the table saw, then finished by  sanding and filing?

Emulate, don't  do that, do better than my crude work.  Through the magic of photography I have a made a master piece. Reality is simply ignored via careful manipulation of the digital camera.

While there's nothing wrong with your photography, I'm calling BS on this statement.  :)

I need to dig back through this thread.... I think you posted the paint formula and I really like that color and think I'll use it. I recently read Alexander Kent's Bolitho series and he often referred to the color "buff", but I always imagined a color closer to yours.

It's been years since I have read Kent's works I need to pick up where I left off in the series
years back.

In one of Alexander Kent's books they have hauled I a cannon to the top of a bluff (a 9 pndr?)
and it is discovered to have a badly over-sized touch hole bushing, it describes the master gunner bushing
the gun while up on the bluff  at the time as a teenager it was good reading I now look back on it
and wonder why this "master gunner" didn't check the gun they were hauling up there and choose
another one before hand........

Plot effects.  Would have left out something to write about otherwise.

I read that book also. Wasn't the cannon with the bad vent the one that already on top of the hill.  A gun badly maintained by the pirates or the Spaniards, but longer ranged than the one theys had yarded up the hill with a rope and cable system then built to get there guns up the cliff?

I saw that Bob Smith was active on the forum, but I wasn't quick enough with this post, so now I can take my time writing it.
Bob, Adrian Roads, or anyone else for that matter; do you know of a prolific British author by the name of Peter Goodwin? His favorite subject is the history of fighting sail: The Bomb Vessel Granado, 1742 -  Nelson's Ships: A History of the Vessels in Which He Served 1771-1805 - Nelson's Victory: 101 Questions and Answers about HMS Victory, Nelson's Flagship at Trafalgar 1805 - The Construction and Fitting of the English Man of War, 1650-1850 - The 20-Gun Ship Blandford, etc.; What kind of regard are his writings held in (I haven't read any of his books yet)?
This gentleman is also the "Keeper and Curator" of the HMS Victory presently on display in drydock at Portsmouth Historic Dockyards; in fact he and his staff are the ones who are responsible for choosing the current yellow ochre shade (that Double D was just interested in) that is now seen on the Victory and her gun carriages. Have you ever had occasion to cross paths with Mr. Goodwin while involved in your own field of endeavor, and if you have, what is your opinion of the man?

That must be so the gun could recoil far enough back to be able to get a ramrod down the barrel.  Or did they use the tar coated rope for a ramrod?
