I currently own a #1 RSI in 7x57. I am about to order another for my son. I reload and have a set of .270 dies a guy gave me. I was going to get another 7x57 or a 30-06. I have no 06 dies. How do ya think the .270 would perform in the 20" barrel RSI? With that barrel length is there any advantage for .270 or 06 over the 7mm. I value most of your opinions.

The 7x57 is good for most North American game and the 7mm has a little flatter trajectory over the 30 cal. Since you already have the dies, power, points etc. why complicate the relaoding process. Other options include the 7mm08, 280 or 7mm Rem Mag.

You didn't say how old your son was or what game you were hunting? If he is very young, that may rule out the 280 and 7Mag. On the other hand, if you will be making 300 yards shots that may rule out the 7mm08.

Well my boy is 13, a hockey player and has shot a left hand bolt 7mm08 since last spring. In the vault we have 7mm, .308, 280 and .260 and a Marlin 30-30. The only one I do not reload is the .280. The boy is a lefty and currently also shoots an Encore .260 and the 30-30 quite well. I'd like to give him an RSI of his own as he really likes mine. I have taken deer out to 270 paces with my 7 x 57. It will be used mostly for deer and occasionally carribou.
