243,308,3006
« on: October 31, 2009, 07:24:05 AM »
I've have a 243 for a little while now, everything fine, but I also wanted a 308. Just got the 308 and need to sight and break in. Now I just realized the 243 and 308 cases are almost same-same. I'll be carefull not to put the 243 in the 308 gun, but was wondering what would happen if the 243 was put in the 308 gun, or even a 243 or 308 put in a 3006 ???

I believe the .243 is just a necked down .308.  It would probably send a slow, wobbly, inaccurate bullet down the bore.  If I wasn't so lazy, I could get up and see how either one would drop into an '06.  But I am lazy.  Ho Hum  Snore.

The 308 won't fit in a 243 due to the bigger diameter bullet. The 308 may or may not fit in the 30-06 due to the larger shoulder on the 308.

You would probably end up with your 243 brass fire formed to 308's if you shoot them out of your 308 barrel.

I know of two brothers and there father who all own the same brand rifle and scopes but all 3 rifles are in different calibers.  All 3 guns look about the same and two brothers  have TWICE shot a 25-06 out of a 7 MM Mag. rifle, ( there dads rifle ). The first time I heard that nothing to bad happened except a ruptured case. The second time was a few years later the other brother did the same thing , this time the gas blow back burnt his skin a little on his face and did some damage to the bolt of the 7 Mag. rifle.
I never really heard the full story I dont think , but luckily neither of them was hurt bad.
I once forgot to remove the ramrod from a 54 cal. muzzleloader and fired it off of sand bags with a max load and took the recoil poke of my life.
Anyway I dont recommend anybody to ever fire the wrong cartridge in any gun just cause it will fit.   :-[

Here's what happens when someone else shot a 7.62x39 round in his 243 Ultra, it didn't hurt the frame, but the barrel underlug was ruined, H&R fitted a 204 Ruger barrel to the frame and returned it to the OP.

Guys...Guys...this was easily cleared up...I just got off the phone too with Gordon at H&R...and asked him exactly what was bent on the barrel, and  as Matt had already stated...the reciever was fine..it wasn't stretched..nor was the hinge pin bent...it was the underlug...the barrel itself was fine...they had already checked the chamber and rifling...all seem ok to them...so they were in the process of putting it back on the reciever to test fire it when they found it to just wobble and wouldn't lock back up....He did say that a piece of the case was missing...and don't know if it just fell out or went down the barrel...but everything else was fine otherwise. This just goes to show you that the gun is a lot stronger than it is normally thought to be...and I for one am glad it has been worked out  for the concerned parties involved.

As with any serious mishap like this...the most preudent thing one can do is to call the company and see what appropiate steps are to be taken.NEF ...and the folks who work in the customer service department are easy to work with and go out of their way to make things right for us,even when it's our own fault.

To add to the possibility of screwing up, just add the 260, 7mm-06 or 358 Win.

If at all possible I would go to as destinctly different style bullets as possible for the two short cartridges you have.

Hopefully you would know if you had the 30-06 in your hand.    Now don't go out there and buy a  25-06, 270, or 280, 338-06, 35 Whelen to add to the mix.

Just my wild asp idea But HOW ABOUT getting your head out of your rectal opening and making sure which ammo you have in your possession and does it fit your firearm that is also in your hand?
If this is above your mental capacity sell all of your guns because you ain't got any business being around firearms

During the Colonial days in Africa, the British didn't have the proper ammunition to give the native troops for their rifles.

What they did was issue cartridges using the same head but smaller bullets.

How did that work?
Well, turns out that the natives were such God Awful shots that the smaller bullet bouncing around in the bore actually resulted in more hits ;D

Won't hurt anything! ;)

I can show you what will happen if you fire a .243 win in a .25-06 Remington.  However, the result might only apply to my gun and not your .30-06 because of chamber differences.  I have to go to work right now, but I'll take a picture and update this post later this evening.  In my case the rifle fired and opening the bolt was not easy because when chambered the shoulder of the .243 sealed against the tapered side of the -06 chamber.  When fired the bullet did leave the barrel and made a fairly normal report.  No harm done aside from powder residue in the chamber that had to be cleaned out.

Based on my experience, you could chamber and fire a .308 Win in a .30-06 chamber.  I don't recommend it.  It was a shooting error on my part when I did it and not intentional.  I have been really humbled by this experience and have changed my range trip rules to prevent recurrence.  It did happen when I had a couple guys talking to me at the bench about problems I was having chambering rounds in my .25-06.  So I accidently picked up a .243 round, chambered and fired on the target.  What a surprise when the bolt handle stopped 1/4" shy of open.  I just kept working it open and closed until the jammed case turned loose.  Things would have been really ugly if I had dropped a .260 Remington in there because of the larger bullet diameter.  I am reasonably certain it would have fit in there, but results probably would have been a lot different.

Anyway pictures coming tonight.

Had a mistaken box of 44 mag go out with me and the 44 deerfield many years ago that ended up being a box of 41 mags ,, the shot like crap and sprikled me with particles of gas powder and brass fragments, which i'm sure was due to the ruptured cases ... Yeaaaahhhh ... Thankfully the rifle wasnt hrt and neither was I... But it smarts , This is why i sold my 45 LC uberti rifle and pistol ... I want to play with full power 45 LC reloads but wont own those two arms and one that can handle full house loads due to the chance of one hot load getting into either of those two arms , It would be an ugly affair I just dont want to imagine....

Tim I think the poster was concerned about send one of the 243s down range from the 308 barrel ... In that instance accuracy is almost sure to be horrible , and a ruptured case to follow etc. .. Nothing you want to have happen..

I would say to avoid that confusion , make the two rifles look diferent , Synthetics on one and say pallet wood furniture on the other ... Or something to that effect.

Hope that helps and safe shooting,

I've used differant colored perm markers for coloring in the headstamp of the case.  One color for each differant caliber so you know when its chambered.  Use caution when shooting a bunch of differant calibers that are from a parent cartridge etc.

I'm color blind so color coding does not work for me.  But it is simple, like Jeepman said, be aware of what you are doing.  Look at the ammo and the gun.  Make sure they match.  If you are not capable of doing that you are a good candidate for Gene Pool removal.  I mean at a glance I can tell the difference between a 30-06 and a 25-06.  And between a .308 and .243.  Been shooting over 50 years and never made that mistake.

Since I own a .38S&W, 5, .38 Spl, and 7, .357s, I have the potential for a disaster.  I'm aware of it and make sure I don't do anything stupid.  I also own 2, .45LCs, 1, .454 casull, and 1, .460 S&W.  The .460s will fit in the .45s, I've checked.  Good way to lose a life.  Be aware.

not quite the .460 in a .45 problem, but I have mistakenly shot .17 HMRs out of a .22 Mag, could not even hit the paper at 25 yards....<><....:)

I did see a guy at work shoot a .308 out of a M1 Garand.  Resulted in straight walled cases based on the .308.  Sure sounded funny too...

MY GOSH
How many guns do you carry at a time, one gun, one cartridge.
at the range look at side of gun, look at flat end of cartridge, if they
have same numbers it is probably ok to shoot.
This is not a big problem, like someone said, if you have your head in the right
place.
If you just want to see what you can get away with as far as shooting
different cartridges in different guns "MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU"

When I make a range trip I always take a bunch of guns, 5-8 normally, swapping them out at the bench to cool after each one has been shot makes it real easy to have the wrong ammo on the bench, I got in the habit of removing the ammo when I move the rifle to the rack. Up until I started doing that I never fired the wrong ammo in any gun, but I did try to chamber at least one in the wrong rifle before I noticed it, that made me change my routine, I think it was a 45-70 in the 405Win, but it's been a while now :-[.

An excellent chance to screw this up is if you use 30-06 brass and use it for your 35 Whelen. At one time when the Whelen was a wildcat and you had a 30-06 it was a real possibility.

This is one of the reasons why I bought another 308 and handed down my Stevens 200 308 to my son. Both shoot remmy 150gr well so when we are hunting only one ammo goes. I also have 303 brit and a 30-30 but feel the cases are distinct enough from each other, and the 303 is a SMLE and the 30-30 is a handi rifle. I have a 100 yd shooting lane right off my back deck so I don't have to take multiple guns out at the same time.
